Does anyone out there know for SURE if you can jack up the R III safely (without damage) to the engine by setting the jack under it? Or perhaps is there another way to lift it properly for oil/filter change etc. ?

I have used a regular automotive floor jack under the motor, but I spread the weight out by placing a board between the "shoe" of the jack and the bottom of the motor. I strongly recommend strapping the front end (front wheel) into something to stabilize the bike whilst (I love that word) jacking it up... the bike can become unstable if you don't.

Thanks guys for all the info! I setteled on a Harborfreight 1000 lb. Motorcycle Lift for $299. Item # 91764-1UEC. It's 86.5" L x 27.5" W with a hight range of 6.5" to 31" and weighs just under 400 lbs., drive the bike up the ramp, drop the kickstand, tie it down and jack it up on it's own two tires. There is a removeable plate under the rear tire that allows you to remove/work on the rear tire, but you must support the back of the bike to do so. HOWEVER once you drive up the ramp REMEMBER you are now 6.5" higher then the floor so be SURE the bike is over to the right far enough for the kickstand to touch the plate or the bike will lean over too far for anyone under 6 ft tall to be able to steady it. I am only 5ft 9 inches and gave birth to HEMMORIODS trying to hold it up! I have since then purchased two 4" x 12" x 8' pine beams from Home Depot and lay them alonge the left side of the lift and now it's a piece of cake to work/clean etc.

I've been using one I built for over 5 years and on 6 different bikes. Works best and easiest on bikes that the engine does NOT hang below the frame, but can be adapted to work with any bike. Makes a a good winter stand too!

I grabbed one of these and it works just the same as a main stand - no jacks required unless you want to sissor the sump to raise the front wheel... it's also cheap & safe
