Wondering if you guys have experienced any problems with your transmission making any type of grinding noise. My Stepdad picked up his Rocket from the Triumph dealer the other day after having the timing chain guide replaced, now it is making some scary noises that appear to be from the tranny. If the clutch is in and you rev the motor everything sounds great, put it in gear and start moving and there it goes. Is this a problem anyone is familiar with? Any thoughts? thanks Fbird

Just got my bike back on Saturday with a new bearing at the rear of the tranny where it joins the driveshaft. I have heard of several people having this problem. Sound rough and changes with the speed of the bike not the motor. rolling along with the clutch in and the motor idling sounds like a bag of gravel in a tin can.

Rocket3sum, I'm glad it's now fixed and you're back on the road.

Three questions: Did they replace anything else other than the bearing? Did they give you any assurances that this would not happen again? Did they say that the new bearing was up-graded, any different, stronger perhaps?

A couple of things make me nervous about this repair. I was told that Triumph considers this bearing failure to be, "not the norm" yet they decided to send a "replacement unit" whatever that is, instead of the bearing, seals etc. that the dealer ordered and I have heard of several others with the same problem. No idea if the bearing unit was an upgrade

I wouldn't get too wiggy wiggy over Triumph sending out a unit instead of seperate parts. I'm in the car biz and this is becomming quite common. Some of it has to do with the available equipment at different repair shops. This bearing may need to be pressed in using special adaptors that many shops don't have. To ensure a complete and consistant repair in an area that may be a trouble spot they choose to replace the assembly.

Just as long as it gets fixed... right???

fbird- what's the latest on this situation?

Tomo, I agree, Triumph has the right idea on replacing it as a unit IMO, clearances are very critical here.

Davo, I too was wondering if there was an upgrade yet. The failed one that I saw was COMPLETELY destroyed. Triumph is asking a lot of this part and I would think it is very susceptible to side load, what with 147ft.lb. twisting it on one end, the torsion spring varying length under load, the swing arm going up and down on the other end and the loose nut at the 'bars trying to perfect getting second gear rubber.

Do many other bikes use this method of shock absorption?

Hey Guys,
No info on the problem yet. Triumph picked up the bike yesterday afternoon. Hopefully I'll have an update later on. My Stepdad is really dissappointed, he just got the bike back after a month in the shop. He had the full power tune installed while it was there and it was runnin awesome, now this. I'll let you know what happens. Fbird

Samething happened to my bike. They replaced the bearing, and everything behind it. Running fine now but hope it doesn't happen again.
