When I was up at Baxter's I met a Bonnie rider that had a Catseye bicycle computer (speedo) on his Bonnie. He said he was able to set it up so that it was very accurate (as far as MPH and distance traveled were concerned).

Catseye Speedo

His had a wire running from his front fork to the speedo head mounted on the handle bar, and he had to make a custom bracket to mount the speedo head on the handlebar.
I liked it because it gave info like highest speed reached on last trip.... average mph.... stuff like that. He said he paid $25 for it and if you check the home page on the link above they have it on sale for that... but alas... out of stock!!!

My local bicycle shop has it for $35 and a wireless version for $45.

Would a GPS do all of this and be as accurate? What is the advantage to a GPS?? Prices are probably a lot higher. Would it be something I could have fun with even though I don't do a whole lot of long distance road work???

Do GPS units croak when they get wet???

Tomo

Hey Tom,
You can't really compare a $35 thingy with a GPS that costs from $100ish up into the thousands. What a GPS will do is tell you exactly where you are within a few meters, map your route anywhere, tell you where you can get gas, food, or play. It will tell you how far, how fast, how long, and average. I just got a Garmin Quest 2 and love it. Much bigger bank than the $34 bicycle trinket, but I sure don't consider my Rocket a trinket.

Hi Tom, Agree with REDR3. I have a Garmin 76 (about $300) and love it. Is it waterproof? Well......it is also made to be used by boaters......if it is possible to receive sat signals under water, it would work fine. Larry

Thanks guys....

See, you can learn something new every day....

I have a question: Do you have to subscribe to a service for these (Like XM Radio) or do they come with software when you buy them???

I are GPS illiterate :hammer: :hammer:

The high end GPS units with hard drives come preloaded with every tile for the US. If you get one like I have a Garmin 60CS you need to buy a program from Mapsource since every tile won't fit on my unit. The software is in the 75-125 range if memory servers me correct.

Hmmmmm...

This is getting expensive just to correct an inaccurate speedometer...but... might be kinda cool for long trips and/or to mystify Hardley riders.. :-D

It seems that Garmin is the man....

I need to look at this more...

No subscription necessary. Thank the US taxpayer for the satellites. You won't mystify all Hardley Ferguson riders, Garmin makes an OEM for them I believe. You will find the choices at www.garmin.com mind boggling. They aren't the only maker, just the tops. Also, good to one meter of water for 30 min so a rain storm isn't going to hurt it. I can transfer mine from bike to truck very easily.

RE GPS Speedo. Was at the Sydney Boatshow in oz recently and saw this new product on display. It was a waterproof person GPS speedo. It displayed current speed, average speed , top speed and distance travelled. It came with a wrist band and could be worn like a watch or on arm between elbow and shoulder like an ipod. Was also waterprooof and could be worn swimming. Was being marketed as the extreme sportmans speedo available for any sport where speed was to be determined. I think it was called a navman.
