Someone posted this V-Max - Rocket comparison.

http://motorcyclistonline.com/roadtests/r3vsmax/

Sometimes I think about getting something smaller and easier to deal with but wiith similar power and speed.

The V-Rod is way over-priced.

I'm not into touring and just basically ride around town, which is 10 miles away from my rural home.

However, the way I've set up my Rocket is really comfortable. I can't deal with sport bikes - too uncomfortable.

How about some arguments for dumping the R3 and getting a V-Max? And visa-versa.

How old is the V-max now? 10-20 years old...something like that. I read in a magazine article a while back they might do a redesign. Go to a V-max board and ask how likely that is. If it is then wait for their new version as it might even be more powerful than the R3!

As for an argument to dump the Rocket you won't get it from me. I am a huge Triumph fan and in particular 3 cylinder engines.

Get what floats your boat, simple as that.

Can't give you any for dumping the Rocket, but the only one for getting a Vmax would be those rumors it soon will be replaced (which have been going on for years btw).

When Yammy does send Mr. Max to the glue factory the very last ones will eventually be worth something, especially if kept in mint condition (as in you don't get to ride it much). The ONLY Japanese bikes which appreciate are models that were utterly unique riceburners. Like the lovely Honda GB500, the not-so-lovely CBX, and the downright dorky PC800 as examples. However none of those were around for 20 years, so it might take awhile for Vmax's to become valuable. But they will someday once they're not in production anymore. It was definitely among the unique.

From what I understand the new V-Max is slower than the Rocket III.

Now the 1985 V- max would dust the Rocket and Just about anything else out there.

I had a 1983 V-65 Magna and at that time it was the worlds fast production bike and held that through 1984. The 1/4 mile time was a 10.31 @ 131 mph. In 1985 the new V-max took top honors..with something like a 10.17 best I can remember.

I sat on a V-Max in the showroom and it felt small - like a toy.

Maybe I'll test drive one.

According to the review (above) the differences (tenths of seconds) wouldn't be apparent to most street riders.

....When you are racing a few tenth is everything :-D

To me if I am ahead by a tenth....it might as well be a mile...

If I am a tenth behind...I am the first looser...

Just buy the bike that you will not regret making the payments when it is snow and Ice outside . and can look at that bike then and say to yourself....Man I sure do love this bike
:-D

V max's can be straight line quick but do not handle & brakes are awful.

Having put in a lot of time on a V-Max and now a Rocket. I have to say the Vmax is a quicker bike. 20 years of go fasts for the Vmax and 2hrs at any tuning shop will yield 20more Hp. It has explosive acceration when v-boost open above 6000rpm. No rpm protection at all so motor will rev above redline at your own risk. I have seen 140mph with a pillion and 155mph flat on V-max. A good ride around town with good poser value. However small tank and not that comfortable around town. Good ground clearence but not matching cornering ability due to chassis shock combination. Lighter and taller than Rocket.
I still prefer the Rocket because will eat up the miles in alot more comfort than v-max and ownly a fraction slower. Can transform Rocket from single seater with classy looks to cruiser mode with pillion seat and windshield in 15 mins.
If I had enough money would own both for very different reasons but can't so the Rocket it is.
I would be tempted to enjoy Rocket and wait. V-max 20 years old and talk the Japs will reinvent V-max with bigger motor and cruiser handling. :???:

just me but i would keep the rocket and pick up a 10-15 yr. old v-max for maybe 3-4 grand as a second bike. even the newer ones are still a little quicker than the rocket or the v-rod in terms of cruiser exelleration but i'll have to agree about the 'handling' issues.

although not in the cruiser class, the zrx 1200 is also a nice alternative and it handles better. you can pick up a 2000 in good condition for about 4k.

the v-rod line is about the only hd line that's not marked up from what i've seen at the shops due to low demands. i still remember back in 2001, the 02' were selling for 25-30k range.

it's still your money so do what's right for you, good luck!
