I'm just now looking into buying a Rocket 111. The 05's that are at the dealer near me in Wisconsin already have the CAT boxes installed. But, from reading here, I'm wondering if they are functional or empty shells. Any insight to this :???:

it is stamped into the catbox, left hand side, a "C" means cat in box, a"Z"-(its an "N" on its side) means no cat in box. stamped near the single pipe exit stub.
have you test ridden an RIII yet??

What seems a bit mysterious is WHY in the world don't they simply put the cat *by-pass* on bikes to be sold in places where an actual cat in there is not required :???: It's easy to see why they leave the catalyst out where they can get away with it, since it's made of some very expensive stuff. But surely the bypass is cheaper to make than the box--in spite of what Triumph charges for it as an accessory item.
Only thing I can think of is the fact it's definitely louder (but certainly not obnoxiously loud) with the bypass instead of the big litter box down there. So maybe it's needed to meet EPA noise requirements which are strict to the point of just plain silly.

From a '61 Duo-Glide to a '05 Rocket III? You might be in for a few discoveries, besides the presence of a cat box behind the motor

I believe you're right. (About both parts of that.)

tom , last time i looked, 1000grams (1kilogram) = 2.2046lb so 5.1 kilo = 11.24 lb.
when I junked my catbox i used my crappy bathroom scales and it came in at 5.5 kilo or 12.12lb, mine was a "C" catbox i.e. had catalyst inside.
as an interesting aside, i read recently that the energy(pollution) involved in mining the materials required, and the production processes involved to make a catalyst far outweighs the supposed savings in 'pollution' the article also said 90% of car journeys by U.K. citizens were 18 miles or less, and a catalyst neede an average of 16 miles of driving to get up to temperature to start working, so for 88% of 90% of U.K. car journeys catalytic converters do diddley squat to reduce pollution, so, never let anyone diiss you for running a big thirsty motorcycle!! :-D

Hey Starman, you are most correct. I did mean to type 11.2 pounds. So now we have a data poing on the "C" box.
Alas, it's the government doing it for our own good. Don't forget the energy and pollution created in making 12 pounds of SS and the disposal of same when we change it.
