I've have read every mag article , click on every web site English & translated every website from other countries.
about the Rocket III
Worked out ( investigated) analyzed probable rider weight ,
minus 3 gallons gas weight factor approx 24 lbs ,minus 15 lbs TOR's pipe over stock etc etc
To match up with stock 127.2 & 132.4 dyno figures in mags.
To achieve this ...I'm coming up with a drive train loss of 9.25%
I know a chain drive loss is a lot less then that but does anyone know anything about drive train loss with shaft drive bikes or does 9.25% seem way out of wack

PS: I'm calculating RickL Rwhp 143 = about Crank hp 157.7

Your in the ballpark on drive train loss, any kind of drive system has a friction coefficient,10% would be expected with the rockets drive train thats just the way things work in design and engineering :???:

My Corvette rates about 15%-17% driveline, and that is with a manual and IRS which soaks up some more percentages. I would think 7-9% would be in the realm...

Hey Dragline!!!

The final drive on the Rocket is going to cause some loss... any time you have bevel gears and change direction the power flows you loose some. Add this with other frictional losses and you get ???? You're a car guy... I always heard rear differentials loose about 8 to 10 %???

The most efficent cars out there are front drivers...they usually lose 10%, while most rear wheel drive lose 15-20% depending on trans, gears, and tires.

Moto chains and belts produce more road power per engine, at the cost of reliability & maintenance.

I'll shut up now...

Shaft drive losses are constant. Losses from chain and belts increase as the RPM/MPH go up. The belts and chains attempt to form a circle, and as the speed increases, so does the amount of force exerted to form the circle. But from what I remember, this is only measurable over 90MPH. The only reason chains are still around is because they are cheap to change ratios for racing applications. Belts are less forgiving with alignment issues, and belts do not last long with 100+ HP motors.

The shaft hypoid gear friction generates vary little loss. I believe the majority of loss due to the inertia generated by the centrifical loads of the wheel, tire, rotor, etc. hardware. the bearing friction is negligable except for preload on the angular contact sets on either end of the shaft.
