Interesting ride yesterday. Went riding with a buddy (mate for you down unders) who has an FJR. Went to the mountains and out of a 250 mi. ride we switched bikes for about 80 mi. of it.

When it was all said and done.......I was VERY glad I owned the Rocket and my buddy wished he did.

The FJR is a fine bike and I would describe it as "the ONE". It does ONE thing very well. It had ONE position for the rider. It has ONE very high range where the torque works for it.

The Rocket does EVERYTHING well. With hwy bars, pegs and a backrest, you can change positions often. It had a WIDE torque range....kinda like driving an automatic...pick a gear and just leave it there if you want.

I don't mean to affend anyone that owns an FJR. I'm just glad the Rocket is what it is!

Ron S,
not quite the same animal as the FJR, but the XJR that I sold to buy the R3 did handle - and when out with the lads it would keep up with true twisters such as the Datona 995i and don't they shift & turn quick!
One of the lads asked me at the end of one ride if that blue blur in his mirrors was me... silly question, easiest thing in the world to follow the pace setter [as long as your bike does handle].
To keep up with the lads on the R3 would probably cost me a whole new back tyre on a single Sunday run and even then only hope to meet up with them at the end! ~ maybe it's just down to the A roads in this country.

The FJR1300 is Yamaha's competitor in the sport touring arena. They've tried to carve out their own niche by making the bike a little sportier than the others and calling it a "Supersport Touring" bike. It's a favorite with the long-distance riding community (the Iron Butt Association guys/gals) because it's comfortable for long rides, has lots of power, handles well, is faired, and has decent luggage. You can also modify the heck out of it. Here's a link to a picture:

FJR1300

The FJR corners better than the Rocket - it leans farther, and you can carry quite a bit more speed through the corners. It also has a higher top end; mine maxed out at 158mph indicated, which is typical. The Rocket will smoke the FJR off the line and will pull well out of the turns, but on a twisty road with riders of equal ability, the FJR wins. If I wanted to take a LONG trip (e.g. cross-country), I'd do it on the FJR. That's not to say you can't do it on the Rocket, but it would be less comfortable.

I had this same conversation on the FJR forum recently, and someone asked me to pick my favorite of the two. Sorry, can't do that - they're too different. I like them both!

My $0.02 worth.

OK Rick, lets ramp it up and see if you can make a desicion here. Let's say circumstances came to the worst and you were forced to sell one of the two due to events beyond your control. You owned both outright, no finance involved and likely resale value was identical.

Which one you gonna keep and is your decision based more around pragmatic reasons or emotive issues (ie, reasons of the head or the heart)??

PS no fence sitting allowed!

Man it should be really simple... Sell the FJR to buy more bits for the Rocket! I mean it really can be any bike that you want... Well sort of!!
