We are planning a R3T trip to the Great Smokey Mountains next summer and I thought if someone had been there B/4 they might have some ideas on what to see and there. We plan to do the tail of the dragon and Dolly wood but I know there is a lot more to see and do. If you have any Ideas or information it would be greatly appreciated.
I did an atmospheric science study on the west side of the park in summer. It's one of the most beautiful places I've been to. Dollywood and Gatlinburg are zoos but I think it was Maxwell's in Gatlinburg - good steak house.
yea a bunch of us (about 30) rockets got together for the 4th annual Rockets Across America event last year and rode the tail of the dragon and blue Ridge Parkway, also the cherola skyway was a good ride. We stayed in Maggie Valley, it's beautiful, we're gonna meet in Kentucky this spring, you're welcome to join us.
Thats two weeks after the Texas Hill Country Salvo, where we're gonna ride the 3 sisters. PM me if you want details.
Concern over here now, talk of Smoking on mountains, chasing Dragons & all on a road trip. Are you all sure about this or have I got the wrong idea. Lucky people - wish I was with you, enjoy & ride safe.
Thanks for the tips. I think we will have a great time 8 bikes, and 12 riders, 3500 hundred miles round trip from Colorado. We plan to hit Nashville, Branson, the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, The Smokey Mountains, and Dodge City. The best part is I have the only Rocket and just a flick of the wrist puts all those HD’S in the rear view mirror.

If Dale Walksler's Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley is open when you're there, it's well worth the trouble. Also try to ride Blood Mountain Road, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Cherahola Skyway.
+1 on what TonyB reported. Just make sure you ride the dragon before 3 PM on Friday and if you have to ride it on a weekend be very careful of the local heros'. Best time on the dragon is a weekday, IMHO.
And if anyone is thinking about heading out that way this month or next, esp. if you're heading in from the west, please note that both Highwy 64 near the Ocoee River (good riding area, BTW) in TN is closed until end Mar/early April and that I-40 is detoured around a rock slide just east of the TN/NC border. Personally, I prefer the Hwy 64 ride as there are some great roads in that area, and avoid the I-40 route completely....but just thought a note would help anyone planning a trip in the near future.
Beautiful riding, excellent roads, twisties, sweepers, etc. There are also plenty of superb lodging rentals available including all sorts of cabins, cottages, chalets, resorts, hotels, etc. No shortage of places to stay. Oh, and friendly people all around.
Nobody ever mentions the roads of West Virginia. US Rt. 250 is pretty awesome and I'm sure there are plenty others!
