Unhappy Rocket Backfire

Hi, I am new to this Forum and have only been riding for about a year. I own an 08 Bonneville America which I am trying to sell and an 08 Rocket III Classic. My Rocket seems to be running lean. It is difficult to start when its cold, Not when its cold outside but when the engine is cold. And it kinda burbles through the exhaust at a steady speed. I took it in for its 600 mile checkup and told them I suspected a lean condition. They said it scanned fine and was normal. After that it started backfiring through the intake on occasion. Usually at low rpm if you blip the throttle quickly, but once it even did it when I was stopped and the clutch was in. I blipped the throttle and POP. I took it back in and they said it was fine again. The service rep said it was just the bikes personality and I needed to get used to it cuz its a lot of bike. They also said they couldnt replicate the problem on a test drive. I left and within 2 minutes it backfired in heavy traffic and died. A good way to get killed I suspect.. So now what do I do. Is this common and is there a remedy? Any help would be appreciated. I plan to drag race this bike and need it to run right when the time comes. And I need it to be safe on the street too.

Do you have any unusual rattles, clanks, loud ticking or other mechanical sounds from the engine itself?

Cold start-up - needs more fuel at starting engine speeds.
Popping - needs more fuel in the MAP based tables under deceleration (high vacuum when engine braking).

If you use TuneBoy/TuneEdit the starting and popping issues can be remedied, with more power/torque and mileage possible.

Without a way to adjust the stock tuning, you are stuck with the issues you mention.

Nonsense. These issues are not normal for an unmodified bike with the stock tune!!!!!

One way to find out if its running lean or not is to pull the exhaust off.
Look in the exhaust ports.
Alot of black "soot" it's rich.
Kinda whiteish looking, it's lean.

How close is a different dealer?
You DEFINETLY shouldn't be having that problem,
I've changed everything on mine and its never done that.
Good luck.

No weird noises or ticking and I know the dealer is incompetent. I drag race cars for a hobby and am very mechanical. This engine acts lean at startup and acceleration and I know its not right. Just was wondering if it was common. Apparently it's not. The next closest dealer is about 60 miles away in Beaverton Ore. I hear good things about them though so I will give them a try. Thanks for the input everyone.

Other Motorcycle: 1050 tiger
Mine pops n bangs on decel occassionally, its more noticeable since having the decat fitted and matching tune.
My st1050 did it and likewise with my 1050 tiger. Apparently thats called 'character' according to triumph.

Cant help with the poor starting though.... maybe worth a 60 mile ride to the better dealer for a chat?
But if you are gonna drag race it no doubt you will be modding and have cause to visit a good dyno center anyway??
