Rear Drive Oil Inspection

Not having had a shaft drive bike before, I was curious to see the state of the oil that came out of the bevel box. Although it's not due to be changed yet, I drained it out anyway. What I saw was a bit of a shock...

The glupe that came out was really quite black and didn't look (to me) like it had any lubrication properties left in it... The drain plug (magnetic) had a fair bit of iron sludge stuck to it as well.

Is this to be expected ?

For the small effort involved and the relatively small amout of oil needed ( I think about 170 ml), I think I'll change this stuff every 5K miles. At that rate a 1 lt bottle will yeild at least 25K miles of riding.

Got to be cheaper than a new rear drive assy...

Changed the rear oil about 20 times on 10 R3's. They all looked like that-and there have been no problems with any of the bikes. Normal, that is. No worry.
