High Idle, backfiring, hesitation.... I'm lost

Hi guys. I lurk over on the Meriden section of the forum. I'm over here because I am trying to help a friend with his rocket 3. He asked me if I could help with his high idle/hesitation problem... so that brings me here.

I did some research before I began and did a 12 minute tune. After that I let the bike cool off and took it out about two hours later. The bike idles around 900-1000 rpm while in the drive way. I start off down the road and immediately hit a rough spot around 2300 rpm. it seems to smooth out until 3100rpm where it get rough again briefly and from there seems ok. If I close the throttle the bike does not drop below 2000 rpm. I pulled into the nearest parking lot and shut the bike off waited a few seconds and restarted it. RPM immediately jumped to 2000... shut the bike off again and wait. Restart and idle is ok. Take off out of the parking lot and immediately the idle is 2000 rpm. If I crack the throttle off idle (2000 rpm) it back fires some times from what seems like the left pipe.

I have read Tomo's thread on resetting the idle speed but it seems to be more for low idle condition than high. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, a lot of what you're describing sounds like a bad throttle sensor.

ugh

I set the idle speed according to Tomo's post. Positioning switch is at .598V. Did the 12 minute tune and took the bike out. The first two miles were great. After that the idle jumped to 2000 rpm but then went back down. After that I noticed severe hesitation from 2000-3000 rpm at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle bucking jerking backfiring. 1/2 to 3/4 it revs normally and pulls hard.

It feels like it is running rich in that rpm rang or a cylinder is not firing in that range... not rally sure how to proceed. It has gone through half a tank of gas in 12 miles and two 12 minute tunes.

I don't have a TuneBoy but I do have an obdII reader/monitor. Is this something I can fix without triumph specific tools or do I need to suggest a trip to the dealer?

If you check this site you will find a lot of posts about your problem. I had mine in to the dealer 3 or 4 times B/4 they got it fixed, however Triumph paid the entire bill even though mine was out of warranty. Best of luck!!!!

Trapper,

I have searched and I see lots of complaints about the problem but I don't actually see a solution. The bike is a 2005 and is completely out of warranty hence me trying to do it my self.

Can I just replace the TPS and recalibrate it with a DVOM?

Mine is a 2005 as well and although it was about a year ago when they got it fixed Triumph paid the entire bill. They know that they have a problem so I would ask your dealer to contact them to see if they will pay for the repairs. If not, I did talk to the tech who fixed mine and he said that he had to replace the TPS, and a small part in the linkage that seemed to hang up. I would make the effort to see if Triumph will fix it, if they do it is the easy way out.

PRIMARY TPS.
Not the secondary, the PRIMARY.

That's what I figured. What role does the secondary play?

Check this site out, add your VIN # and it will tell you if your bike is affected. I had a low idle that was recalled on my 05 Triumph dealer remapped it free of charge,

I had problems with my TPS as well. High idle would come on unexpectedly. The dealer replaced it once, but problem resurfaced. THey told me Triumph was aware of teh eissue and was working on a new TPS housing (??) ANyway, this spring they called me and told me that Triumph had a new TPS designed, and to bring my bike in. They put it on, and everything is fine now. NO more issues. No charge from the dealer either. My bike was just out of the warranty period.
