blown speedy motor
hi
blown up my speed triple motor - holes in the cases front and rear.
I assume a tiger motor will fit, but will have different gearing?
should I be looking for a sprint/speedy motor alone?
not concerned about the right motor as mine had six gears (the bike was a rebuilt salvage) and it's used as a winter hack.
anyone know of anyone with a suitable motor for sale - UK only please.
cheers
mark

Geez Mark, thats bad luck. We have had a few blown motors on here lately, not good.
Tiger motor will fit but cams are different, they develop less peak horsepower, more bottom end though. Not sure about gearing though I imagine it would be the same.
Trident/Sprint/S3/Daytona black motors all the same except for Super 111, different head design. A motor from the classic series, like a Thunderbird will go in but I don't know that it would look the part in a Speed Triple with chrome covers and the fake cooling fins!
Holes in the cases? Did a rod let go?
Cheers,
Roden

This place may be worth a try; http://www.triumph-ant.co.uk/engines2.html I've never dealt with them, but others here have commented favourably.

Thanks for the link dave. I've dealt with triumphant before and found them excellent for service/knowledge and price. I've emailed them so we'll see what they got.
Roden. I've not bothered to tear out/down the lump yet as I've four other bikes to sort first! I guess if I could get a bottom end I might just stick the top of mine on that, but the holes front and aft suggest a rod doing its thing alright! Thanks for the pointer on the engine types, I'll keep an eye out on fleabay for those. There's a Tiger lump available now, but it's a bit too pricey and I'll be looking to buy early new year so I can wait for a bit.
Are Speedy's generally oil burners? I'd just done 2000miles round trip to the Alps and had caned the bike. For it's age/weight gotta say when it's on song it's a cracking bike to ride. Although I slightly overfilled before leaving I reckon I burned too much oil and starvation was the cause of the failure.

Bad show with the blown motor Readmarx.
I have personally never seen a T3 motor lunch its self, but it seems to be happening a bit lately. I was naively under the impression that they were so over engineered that they would just slowly wear out burning more and more oil and just lose performance. (Just like the old Holden 6 cylinder engines, Aussies will get this comparison )
Good luck with the heart transplant.

in my case it was an external factor that caused it to blow.it was the dealership neglecting to clean out the sump of all the old bits of sprag clutch that did mine in!

Still haven't cracked mine, so I can't say what did it in.

from the day I got it the motor felt like a phat turbine... the crank felt heavy and I'd guessed probably heavily engineered by the weight of the whole machine and the way it's put together - to last a war with a few cups of tea in between perhaps? I think outta interest I'll pull the lump apart at some point just to have a peek inside and see what's what... I can appreciate the theory about them just wearing out over time though. Sorry to hear about the poor workmanship at your dealer 750 - that's an arse.

These bikes are definitely not oil burners, generally speaking that is.
I think most here would agree that their bikes don't use a drop between oil changes and some of 'em get ridden hard!
You are right, these motor bikes are a joy when on the throttle...
I hope you turn up a mill soon,
Cheers,
Roden
