mini overhaul
started a mini overhaul on the bike today.
it has a tendency to drop down to 2 cylinders most of the time, so thought i would pull the carbs, airbox and coils, and take it from there.
so: i pulled the carbs, removed inline filters, float bowls and diaphragm caps, everything cleaned up and reassembled.
next, took airbox apart. probably not the rason it drops down to 2, but the filter was clogged solid with crap, and airbox was minging, so took it inside (while mrs was at work)and gave it all a good scrub in the kitchen sink.currently waiting for it to dry (cos i aint brave enough to use one of her towels) before i re oil the filter, and put it back together again.
edit:
also gonna drop some oil out, as she is running a little high, and i think thats why the airbox is such a mess, and gonna re torque sump bolts while under there!
whipped off the coils, and cleaned up all the connectors and gave everything a liberal spray of wd40.
just waiting on the air box now, then i can put everything back on, and see how she goes!
i also got my new wheels on, with tyres, so might be able to go take it for an MOT later!

for god sake, i still cant get it on!
i managed it a couple of times, but it slipped off again,it seems that the jubilee clips are no longer enough to hold it tight, as you can spin them on the rubber, when they are as tight as they will go.
it seems to be the middle rubber that wont go on.
im gonna wait till next payday and buy a new airbox, it is over due one, and i think the rubbers are too old, and have gone too hard to be able to get them onto the carbs properly
please let me know if anyone has experienced this problem and if buying a new one rectified the issue

The rubbers on the air box have metal springs in them are they all seated ok, the rubbers and clips are a seperate items to the air box, I've replaced the carb inlet rubbers before and they were a little more pliable, not had cause to replace the air box one yet though.

maybe it would be possible to remove the spring clips inside the rubbers, take the rubbers out of the airbox, and put them on the carbs, then put the rubbers back into the airbox?

maybe...........
if i drop the engine, but leave it on the rear mount, nd let it swing down, i might be able to get enough room to work on the ****er!

I am not sure if this is an acceptable option for your situation, but I have found that modding the back side of the airbox (i..e the cover) was a good choice for me.
By cutting the back cover it into two parts (with a think vertical cut at the appropriate spot and making a gasket out of a bit of black tubing where the halves mate) allows it to be put on last by attaching the two halves.
Makes pulling and refitting the carb rack & airbox pretty easy with lots of room to fiddle things around. I know it is not 100% correct but it sure makes the process easier.

Mine is all buttoned up and I looked in and you can't see/photo.
Here is someone else's airbox, terrible picture I know. I indicated where I cut mine.
The back half of the airbox screws off. Use a band saw or something fine to make a complete vertical cut in the back half so that it is in two pieces, where shown in the pic. I used a dremel, but something finer and like a miter box would be great.
I split a piece of black hose/tubing/fuel line to slip on one side of the cut to make a sort of gasket that sits along one cut edge.
Now you don't have to fiddle a rack of carbs in between the airbox and intakes.
You can mount the rubbers to the intakes, mount the carbs, mount the box half of the airbox, put the filter in, and screw on the two halves of the air intake side very easily.
In future you can change the air filter without a major ordeal. Pulling of the carbs is much simpler, no swearing, cut fingers, cut gaskets, broken cable, etc.
Sorry for the terrible photo, I will look for a better example.
