D1200 hates the cold

Have in the last two weeks had problems with my 95 D1200 on cold mornings. Usually Starts ok but some of the cylinders die as I pull away. Bangs and pops until fully warm. When warm runs very smooth with no problems. I have tried adding 1% ethonal to the tank as stated by others on this board. Even purchased some Dry fuel additive. This morning the bike refused to run on all four cylinders mainly running on 2 or 3 cylinders with the occasional backfire from the 4th cylinder. Had to push it home and leave. New genuine coils were fitted in 2006 and have done 2000 miles since then. Thought it may be carb icing but not so sure. any ideas please?

G'day,

Have the valve clearances been checked lately? I know that they can cause starting issues when they are out of spec.

Cheers,

Roden

Hi Did these myself 2000 miles ago. Do coils go faulty when cold?

damp getting in

hi dean
had a misfire on my 1200 a few months back that cleared
when ridden a few miles . This happened agained the following day
so i cleaned all the terminals on the coils with a piece of emery paper then cleaned with spirit.Reconnected sealed with vaserline
that worked in my case.
good luck

Hi Bj Your misfire sounds just like mine! Tonight I have taken all the plugs out and cleaned them. Cleaned the coil connections and cleaned and checked the HT leads. Also put in a new vacuum pipe. it runs ok now, but tomorrow morning it may not be so good. Seem to be getting a good spark from both coils. I thought it may have been carb icing. Hope I don't have to push the bike home again.
Regards Dean

Just a thought... A few years ago I was having a problem similar to yours. It started out looking like a coil was arcing to the bottom of the tank. I bought a set of Accel coils and wires. Seemed to fix the problem. Then it started again. I couldn't see any arcing this time, but it felt the same. It turned out it was one of my brand new plug wires. I did a little research and ended up putting a set of Magnecor race wires on it. Never had the problem again. I've probably got 20,000 miles on it since then. I had to give them the dimensions etc of my wires and they made a set up for me.... http://www.magnecor.com/
