Surging & Flat spot

Made my first attempt at adjusting the carbs on my '95 Sprint to cure a bad surge @35mph. Could'nt get the carbs to synch at both idle and 3K so settled for the 3K synch. Road test reveals only marginal improvement in surge but now have a deep flat spot at five 5k when on the gas hard from idle. Doesn't misflre just sits down to about 6.5K then takes off again like normal. I don't yet have a manual for the bike or the Mikunis, just did it by the seat of my pants with a manometer. Is there another adjustment besides the screws that do the throttles?
Where did I go wrong?

Dave,

This could be down to carb sync but could also be due to;

Dirt/water in your fuel or already in the float bowls.

Float needle valves not seating properly.

Also check that Coils HT leads and plugs are good. With the coils also check that the LT spade connectors are clean and a tight fit.

The above is general advice which would apply to any make of bike.

Hope this helps.

Sync'd or unsync'd carbs aren't going to have much affect on how the bike runs at 5k. There's something else wrong. The fact that you can't sync at idle is a clue. Upping the engine speed to 3k is masking the problem. The carb that won't balance at idle is probably the culprit but it could be anything. At 13 years old, Mikunis are ready for all new rubber. Mikuni main jets and needles like to wear out. It could be coils, it could be fuel delivery, are your valves in adjustment? Look for vacuum leaks.
