more paint for a 98 900 Trident Sprint

I posted a thread recently on Trident paint codes but didn't get any answers so I guess people missed it, don't know the answer and/or it was a boring/repetitive question so nobody responded. Anyway, here goes again.

1.Do triumph have a specific paint code id on their bikes and/or is it hidden within the VIN number ?

2.If no paint code is on the bike how do you work out what colour it is. In my case I think the tank/fairing/plastics are BRG but the frame ,wheels and engine are a sort of light grey metallic colour. Any pointers as to how to get an exact match would be much appreciated.

3.Also, how have they covered the trailing arm. It's doesn't look like paint, more electro plating process ? Very nice but difficult to restore scabby/oxidised areas ? I guess you have to have the entire assembly off and have it replated for a pro finish ?

4.Same question re exhaust headers, balance box and end cans(mufflers)

regards

Simon

G'day simlog,

I can't answer questions 1 & 2 but as for question 3, you can have it or any other metal parts for that matter powder coated in just about any colour you like and question 4, the exhaust system can be ceramic coated. This produces a fantastic finish and is not affected by the heat.

Of course, these coatings can cost a bit, especially the ceramic job but the results are stunning.

Cheers,

Roden

1. Triumph paint codes are here: http://www.triumph.co.uk/uk/2046.aspx

2. There is a paint code for BRG, but not for the engine / frame / wheels.

3. Probably anodized. If I was going to refinish one, I would probably go for powder coating.

4. People often repaint the exhaust with barbecue or exhaust paint from a rattlecan. People with a bit more dosh tend to go for the ceramic coating. Depends what you're willing to spend; the ceramic will look better & last longer.

Cheers,
-Kit

Regarding Kits point 4, another option for exhausts is black chrome. It is costly compared to a BBQ paint rattle can job but comparable to ceramic coating in costs. From my own experience the durability is equal to ceramic coating but the finish is quite different as it retains a gloss rather than a satin finish (similar to factory finish but nicer IMHO).

Good point, Bernie! IIRC, some of the T3s came from the factory with black chrome & some came painted.

There are also different kinds of ceramic coatings available. The ceramics will never match the gloss/shine of black chrome, but are said to be more durable.

Cheers,
-Kit

black chrome

I agree, the orignal chrom/plating on the exhaust looks great. Might consider this once the BBQ paint has peeled off.

BTW, Triumph don't know what there silver/grey engine paint code is.
