i need help

hi folks my bike has all the trade marks of a triple trident ( higher handle bars ,chrome headlight brackets)but the looks of a speed triple . this is where i am confused ??? the vin number on the chasis is SABTVR03057218135> which on the m.o.t document gives the frame a year of 1971, and on the v5 registration documents the date of first registered is 1987 , and on another piece of paper it has engine is a trident 855cc (1993) confirmed by triumph ....?????? but it has an oil cooler below the radiator which makes me thinks it a daytona 900 ???? i am confused , can anyone help . cheers

hey dude,

looks like a trident to me, the front end gives it away. also i cant see a rear damping adjuster poking through there plus those wheels are trident ones i think.

but the oil cooler is certainly different.
confusing???

cheers,
hedgy.

Looks like a Trident to me also. Front end, wheels, and location of rear caliper. Engine looks to have been silver.

Hey dod, I put a pair of Tommaselli clip-ons on my Sprint. They are really nicely made and are fully adjustable every which way, also with a bit of rise which the originals don't have. They are available in 43mm by special order from the factory. I paid $260AUD which equates to 125GBP.

Highly recommend these bars.

Cheers,

Roden

I believe the Trophy had an oil cooler as well; it was only necessary on the full-fairing models, but some people like to add it to the naked so they don't run as warm as they're supposed to. It bolts straight on, like so many other parts from this series.

You obviously have a Speed Triple tail section, but again, bolt-on.

As far as the frame goes, you have a Speed Triple / Sprint / Daytona / Trophy / Trident frame. The differences in the models were determined by what was bolted onto the frame, not the frame itself.

I haven't gotten around to my Trident rebuild yet, but I picked up some used Honda CBR600 clip-ons from whenever it was they used 43mm forks on that model. I need to grind off a small lug on each, but they will fit nicely after that. Not nearly as nice as Roden's Tommasellis, but at US$30 not nearly as pricey either! Also, with a longer bolt, they'll take the factory bar-ends.

Also, your VIN, MOT, & reg are all very, very wrong. VIN should begin with "SMT" for a Hinckley bike. 1987 was 3 years after the Meriden factory was demolished & 3 years before the first Hinckley bike was sold.

Also, welcome!

Cheers,
-Kit

Take a look at the front brakes, are they solid discs with two piston sliding calipers - Trident, or floating discs with four piston fixed calipers - S3. Rear brake is the same on both bikes, low slung caliper early models, high mounted caliper later models. These bikes were 'modular' and bits from various models can be swapped around. Trident (Showa) forks are non-adjustable, S3 (Kayaba) forks can be adjusted.
