96' triple ???

Gday all
just looking at a 96 Triple ...what do you think of this model ?
have they reached the collectable sort of status as yet ?

Currently riding a 01' Thunderbird but looking for something else to fill up a spot in the shed !

G'day jonesywa,

First up, is it a Speed Triple that you are looking at?

If so, this is probably the pick of the bunch. That year got the 6 speed plus the problems with the starter sprag were largely resolved with an upgrade.

The T3 motors are rock solid and full of character. Tuned properly, they give very rewarding performance, especially the mid range which is quite awesome!
There are a few little quirks with these things, as with most bikes but are mostly easily overcome. The bolt holding the drive rotor on the alternator tends to come loose and causes a distinct rattle in that area at idle. Fortunately, the alternator is easily removed and the bolt and its locking washers can then be replaced.
Coils can tend to go bad causing rough running and an erratic tach, again, easily fixed by (usually) cleaning the spade connectors on the coils but in some cases new coils are required.
The rear shock is a bit weak, if it is the original and has 60-70k on the clock, it will probably require replacement.

You already ride a Thunderbird so you would be well used to the mechanical symphony emitted by these mills and may already have some experience of the little problems mentioned above.

These bikes are quite desirable and seem to be getting decent money here. If it is a nice low k example, you could be paying towards 10k! If the bike has a higher mileage I wouldn't be put off though, as long as the servicing has been looked after properly.

All in all, a fantastic piece of kit, not the fastest or sharpest handling machine compared to some of the sport bikes of the day but will blow most of them away with its character and the experience of that soulful engine. When it is on song, it is a delight!

Gives us a bit more info on the bike you are looking at, I'm sure some others will chime in here too...

Cheers,

Roden

Jonesy,

What sort of money are they asking for the S3? that will give a clue as to how collectible they have or haven't become. People are telling me low km versions are going up in value. You certainly don't find many for sale here in Oz.

Good luck with it.

New 96 owner here, loads of grunt, loads of smiles and a noise that rattles the very gates of hell.

It's a proper bike, I keep getting the urge to ride in a back to front flat cap and goggles, it's bound to pass though.

Who cares if it's collectable?

I just picked one of these up, and I love riding it. true, it isnt as quick as some other bikes, but it is fast enough to get you in trouble, and it turns heads everywhere I go, way more than my chromed out HD does.
