Headlamp

Took the trumpet for the MOT today, after bleeding the brakes and cleaning up the rear disk. Anyway aside from an advisory on a slight exhaust leak it went through ok....except: the headlamp beam looked as if it was a left hand drive or something. the very nice guy taped it off for me to get through the test, and mentioned that some bikes have left or right bulbs depe nding on which side of the road you drive. Can't say I've ever heard of this, but looking at the headlight lens it appears to be entirely symmetrical. Anyone have any ideas?

I know that there are specific H4 globes for bikes which are different to car globes. Have a look at that first. I have never heard of left or right hand globes, anyone?

Maybe your headlight just need adjusting?

Cheers,

Roden

You get different headlight units for left or right. I had to get a new set of headlights when I moved from the UK to Germany in order to get it through the German MOT. They have different part numbers depending on which way they deflect the beam. Could be yours is imported from Europe or someone fitted a replacement headlight?

Thanks both.
Down the shop it is then. Or maybe its fate telling me to fit the sprint fairing I've been keeping in the shed!

Same thing happened to me.Closer inspection of the light revealed no info. on whether it is for left or right hand use. Also looking at the light from the front in the 3 o'clock position there is a quadrant design on the lens - I always thought this ment the beam went to the left. The MOT man insisted that no adjustment would cure it and that it was a wrong light unit, you could clearly see the beam going to the right on his light beam machine. It is a Hella unit made in Germany.I think that Triumph fitted the same headlight to Home and Export models to save money - no problem until the home models required their MOT after 3 years!

There are different headlight assemblies for different places. I only have a Trident fiche, but the same part fits Speed Triple as well as America, Speedmaster, & TBS. FWIW, here are part numbers & region codes for those bikes:

2700130-T0301 LH Dip, UK, NZ, AU, JP, ZA, CY, HK, MY, SG

2700135-T0301 RH Dip, ES, DE, IT, PT, CH, GR, AR, BR, SE, CA, US

Cheers,
-Kit

Thumbs up

thanks for the info Kit.
Seems like a trip to Triumphant might be in order then. Haven't checked them out yet and its a nice ride up there from here.
I guess the one thats on there now will come in handy if the planned trip to France ever happens.
btw, changed to conti road attacks, mainly as the bridgestone on the back flat spotted quite badly and I'm hoping for better from the Contis. Seems to lean over more smoothly with the Contis on, or it could be my imagination!

Heh. I also noticed with the Sprint that my rear Conti turns in much nicer, but it did occur to me that anything would turn in nicer with the flat spot I had on the old Pilot Power.

Cheers,

There was nothing wrong with that Pilot Power Kit, you could have got at least another 2 miles out of it....

The Conti's seem good don't they. I like the Road Attack on the front, feels very stable.

I didn't look at the headlight bulbs on my Sprint when I converted from dual headlights to single, I assumed that they were both the same.
I used one of those bulbs from the twin set-up in my single headlight, can't remember which one but the beam does seem to throw to the left. Hmmm.

Cheers,

Roden
