A "little" restoration

Sent all the engine casings off to the powder coaters in Birmingham (UK). Apparently they need to be chemically stripped of existing paint before re-coating. In addition to usual masking they also got me to mount the casings on ply wood to prevent paint getting on to the machined surfaces.

Both wheels are off and stripped. One rotor bolt refused to move so was ground off and then removed with a stud puller. Front wheel bearings were easy to remove but I cannot budge the rears..any suggestions much appreciated....!

I'm going to replace the gear change pedal bush as it's a little floppy and purchase a set of stainless steel casing bolts. The rear exhaust/foot peg support was also cracked so that's been replaced with a second hand unit from triumphant.

I've gone much further than intended but you know what it's like when you start taking a close look as what needs doing....!

The heat from grinding the front rotor bolt also probably helped you to get it out..

Rear wheel sound like a bit of a pig....all I can say is I used the small cut outs in the internal wheel spacer to get a punch on the inside edge of the bearings and used a 4lb hammer hitting one side and then the other to drop it out evenly. That's probably where you are at too so good luck with your next assult on it..;-)

We are lucky here in Oz, no nasty salt on the roads to eat away at the engine covers - mine are still looking as good as the day they left the factory, other than some minor sand blasting underneath.

Mot is right on with those bearings, a love tap with a suitably sized hammer and punch is the order of the day.

Also have a look at the knuckle joints on your gear linkage, they will also flog out and cause a lot of slop in the action...

Cheers,

Roden

bearings

Hi Mot,

Yes, I started on the lugs on the internal spacer with a punch but it started to damage the spacer. However, I guess I can get an new spacer if thats the only way to get the bl**dy things out.

Roden,
I've been thinking about swopping out the gear change knuckles as well. However this bike was supposed to be an interim machine which I just rode and didn't take much care of. It was £9 to fix the holes in the carb diaphragm but the bills are now mounting.....!

thanks

Simon

Don't worry about a little bruising of the spacer...they are only mild steel and can any damage can be filled away easily...go for it !
