Funny flat spot

You'll have to excuse me if I don't use the technical terms on this coz I'm still learning.

I've had a flat spot on acceleration for a while now (a few months). I've read a couple of other threads relating to this but they don't seem to describe quite the same thing.

If I go up through the gears accelerating quite hard then come back down through the gearbox to low revs (i.e to a roundabout or something) I have a big flat spot when I pull away. If I blip the throttle with the clutch in before pulling away it'll clear its throat and no problems.

The bike ticks over fine and there are no other problems like misfiring or anything like that. I've changed the plugs which seem fine. I cleaned the coil connecters etc like has been suggested with no joy. I also cleaned the airfilter which was messy but that didn't help.

Could anyone tell me if this sounds electrical or fuel related? I put some engine cleaner in and it was fine for a tanks worth of fuel but the hesitaion soon came back. I'm guessing fuel then?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as the next step will have to be some sort of diagnostic trip to the Triumph dealer and I'd rather not do that.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Gav

Drain your carbs through a few times with the small drain screws at the bottom of the carb bowls...it can run a bit rough if there are particles that float around and temporarily block the fuel...easy to do and will either be a cure or one more thing to tick off your list...

Going rich, might mean the needle float valves are wearing out - what size main jets do you currently run, is your air filter good? You might just have a lean fuel mixture screw, dirty airbox and sooted out
plugs. Is you tach erratic at all, is there a misfire or a momentary stumble? - that would suggest electrical, it would also worsen. I seem to remember something about carb rebuild kits somewhere!

Thanks Mot, I'll definitely give that a go. Is it worth cleaning the tank as well do you think? Is that just a case of taking it off and swilling it around with some clean fuel?

Thanks Trypcil. I cleaned the air filter and stuck it back in a month or so ago. It looked ok but I might try a new one to see if that helps.

I've no idea about the main jets. The bike is as bog standard as they come so I'm assuming they are too. The tach is good and not erratic. The bike is fine at idle and when riding at low speeds. It's just when I've been higher in the revs that I seem to get the problem when I accelerate again.

You could do the tank but I wouldn't bother...I normally run the fuel cleaner...redex or some such pretty rich..and about 3 or 4 times a year.
