Question Carb update and airbox question

Hi Lads,
From the previous post I removed the carbs suspecting the petrol leak from the left carb.

Upon inspection The float levels were o/k but the large o-ring seal on the float which seals the incoming fuel at the float needle seemed wrong infact you could lift out the complete float assembly with no resistance from the seal.

Compared to the 2 other floats which were relatively tight, I suspect the fuel was by-passing the Float needle section straight into the bowl flooding the carb ergo petrol running out.

I replaced all the o-rings in all the carbs and now all offer resistance to being lifted out therefore a decent seal.

Checked the spark plugs L-black and sooty, C- normal looking, R- Black but not sooty. Cleaned and replaced. Will do a mixture test and adjust when I get a suitable tool to reach the screws.

Reading the Haynes manual it shows the airbox drain tube plug being removed to facilitate draining.

Now comes my question - 2 tubes exit from airbox 1 is crankcase breather so no problem but the other tube about 15mm dia thin walled and soft headed to the rear of the bike and down to the road and is approx 450mm long I take it that it is the drain tube but is far longer than the tube shown in the haynes manual and has no plug.

The tube exits the airbox between the carbs and air filter so if it is not plugged, would it not draw air in - bypassing the filter.

So should I seal this tube?
thanks in advance

Hi, I found the same thing on my 94 Speed Triple, I think it must be a Haynes manual error as I have had no problems.

Yup it will draw air...might not cause too many problems but I would be tempted to plug it...mine has the afore mentioned plug, also the air it may draw will be unfiltered and from road level (ie maybe more crap in it than usual )...but like I say it might not create a major problem, just my understanding of it...the plug could also stop any fuel/oil from being splatered on your rear wheel perhaps..

You could use a pen lid or somesuch to do the job ;-)

I found the same thing on my 95 Sprint, but there must be a plug. You are right, MotT3, dust from the road level, ouch! My friend has originaly plug on his Honda Shadow, so I put a plug on my drain tube and that's it. For plug I used rubber tap from brake caliper bleeder.
