Speedometer Cable Thread Pitch

My speedometer cable broke, right before I put my '98 Sprint up for sale. I got a new cable, and went to install it. Unfortunately, it was cross-threaded by someone previously, and stripped off the threads on the speedometer.

There's not enough good thread for the cable to grab onto. However, there may be enough material for a die to make new, good thread out of. It's 12mm, but it's not a standard pitch.

Since it's a finger-tight item, I'm thinking it's pipe thread.

Anyone know the actual thread pitch for the speedometer?

I'd really like to avoid buying a new speedometer.....

Thanks!

I have a used speedo kicking around that could be yours for a lot less than a new one if it comes down to it, but first things first: What are you doing selling your Sprint?!?!

Seriously, the pitch is 1.0, which is much finer than any standard I can find.

Cheers,
-Kit

So it's a standard machine-thread shape, but with a 1.0 pitch? Okay, good to know. I have a specialty tool place around here, and I may be able to track down something like that. I may take you up on your speedometer, too. How many miles show on it?

I'm selling the Sprint because I bought a Yamaha GTS1000: the bike with the James Parker swingarm front end. I really can't justify having two sport-tourers so close in size, weight, and performance.

I'm kind of bummed about it: I've always wanted a GTS1000, and I love the bike, but I also really like my Sprint. Especially with the new shock, front end, brakes, etc!

The threads match up perfectly with the 1.0 on my metric thread gage.

The speedo shows 37k+, but I believe I can zero it out or put it to whatever you want. (I rolled the replacement up to match this one.)

So you did pull the trigger on the GTS. Very cool bike, but I bet you'll be back! An inline 4 just can't touch the triple, even with extra valves.

Cheers,
-Kit

I found a die for $36 today. I'll fiddle with it tomorrow. If it doesn't work, I'll get you to roll it up to the 60K-odd I've got now.

Yes, It's cool. Especially going to the national rally, and hanging out with James Parker.

And yes, I'll be back. I bought the GTS rather than a Speed Trip. Every time I ride my Sprint, I'm reminded how much I like the triple. Until someone makes a comparable front end, I'll probably hold on to the GTS, but I'll have another triple for every day.
