Trident 900 Windscreen Conundrum

I recently added a 1996 Trident 900 to my Triumph stable. I've been a fan of Givi windscreens for naked bikes, so I purchased a Universal Airstars windscreen for the Trident. When I attempted to install the windscreen, I realized for the first time that the clip on handle "bars" on the Trident don't have any "bar" to them. The Givi windscreen mounts to the headlight bracket and has two stabilizing bars that connect to round handlebar mounts. Without any round handbars, there's no place to put the mounts. Doh!

Before I go out and fabricate some contraption that will add a round piece to my handle bars (such as an appropriate bit of PVC pipe paint black and shoved into the plugged hole on each handlebar), I figured I'd ask the Board if there was a better solution.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!
Scott

This might not be helpful, but you could just exchange the screen you have got for the model that does not have bar mounts. Mine is the A210 universal spolier/screen, which does a decent enough job. Headlamp mount only.

What - and admit defeat? Never!

I'm thinking of cutting an appropriate size piece of conduit, painting it black and sticking it into the hole on the other side of the clip on (the side with the plastic plug covering the hole). I figure some JB Weld will hold it in place...maybe.

I'm hoping someone else will chime in with other ideas.

Ok, there is a super bike handlebar conversion available that a few guys on this forum have done and would then allow your screen to clamp to the bars in the usual fashion but, that is more expense. This conversion does look trick though.

I didn't like the bars on my Sprint because there was no adjustability for angle etc so I changed them out for adjustable clip-ons. Similarly, if you go with super bike bars, you will have some adjustment available forwards and backwards and there are a lot of different styles of bars out there. Plus, you will be able to mount your screen.

Failing that, your idea of a conduit suitably bent to fit between your existing bars is not a bad one, it only has to stabilise the screen, it is not the main support. I guess you would have to get it all together off the bike and then slide both bars over the fork tubes at the same time ensuring that your bolts on each side are going to line up with the threads in the top triple clamp.

Interesting project....

Cheers,

Roden

OK, go for it if you must. If it all goes horribly wrong, after many hours of effort, you will have the peace of mind brought about by the knowledge that it was all in pursuit of a noble cause. Either that, or the inability to admit you bought the wrong screen.

don't forget to post some pictures of the solution that you bodged (sorry, crafted) at the end of it!

You've just nicely summed up my entire motorcycling career in a single post!

I did look into the superbike bars, and they are an interesting option. I think I'll try to fabricate something this weekend up to the point of doing irreversible damage to the clip ons. At that point, if the solution doesn't work, I'll stop and order the superbike bars.

If my fabricating works, I'll post pics. If not, I'll burn the evidence.

Been there, done that etc.. Its all part of the joy of owning a motorcycle. I have a list of "improvements" that turned into rescue operations over the years. Good luck.
