Just bought a '95 S3!
Hi all, my name is Alex and I joined this forum today after purchasing a 1995 Speed Triple! I'm already in love with this motorcycle. Just a few questions though:
-I want to add a fly screen and bar-end mirrors. Where can I find information on these?
-It appears that the previous owner installed heli-bars. The bars right now sit about even with the top of the triple tree. How much lower are the stock bars? Does anyone know if heli-bars are adjustable. it might be nice to have them even a little higher.
-Currently, the bike has foam hand grips. This wouldn't be an issue, but I park outside and fear that the rain will destroy them. The PO said he couldn't change handgrips because of the barend weights. Is this true? Where can I find information on changing the hand grips?
-Also, what kind of gas mileage figures can I expect from this motorcycle?
Thanks for any help! here's some pictures. The bike had 23,100 miles when purchased.

Welcome! Looks like a keeper. I get about 32 mpg around town and close to 40 on the road if I'm not hammering it above 75+. Top speed by the speedo is... I'm not sure. I haven't found the right road combo of smoothness, runout and no po-po potential. Thus far (today as a matter of fact), 120ish by the speedo, but I ran out of road and I had a tank bag and other crap on the bike, so some day I'll find out what the top end really is.
Here's a link to my windscreen and bar-end conversion. I used Crispy's bar-end mirrors, which he actually makes for XRex's but I had a buddy make me a good deal on a spare pair he had.

Hi Alex, congrats on your purchase, she looks sweet.
The stock clip-ons on these things are quite low, probably 2-3" lower than what you have now. They are great if you are moving around a lot in the twisties but would be hard on a long straight haul.
I am using Tommaselli adjustable clip-ons which would be somewhere in between stock bars and your helibars.
If you want a much higher position, maybe you could mount your bars above the triple clamp. That would raise them the thickness of your triple clamp.
Most of the bar end mirrors come with collets that clamp into the end of your bar, as you tighten the bolt, it expands the collet and grips tight. This way though, you lose the bar ends. Others can actually clamp around your bar end or in some cases the bar end can be machined down to suit. I haven't got the bar end weights on mine and I find it a bit buzzy, which starts to numb my hands after a couple of hours straight.
I actually didn't like the collets that came with my CRG's, they look flimsy so I got a pair of Bark Busters which are used on dirt bikes and used them as the securing plug for my mirrors. Very strong and very cheap.
If you do go with bar ends, get 3" mirrors, I got 2" and I can't see s***!
There are a lot of aftermarket screens that you could use, all of them will require some fettling to fit though. I just got an Emgo Cafe Quarter Fairing for mine, just to break the wind a bit, I'll post up some pics when its done.
Finally, I can't see why your bar end weights would prevent you from changing out your grips.
Have fun with your new ride!
Cheers,
Roden

Thanks for the advice guys! I put on over 100 miles on the bike yesterday (after buying my insurance of course), and the bike is absolutely fantastic! Also, there's no discomfort in my wrists, so I suppose the riding position isn't too bad (although the foam hand grips probably help too). My legs however get a little sore after a long ride. I'm 5'10" and mostly legs, so I'm guessing the how high and set back the pegs are is the cause. I'm sure I'll get used to it over time though.

This is the fairing I'm looking at. I talked to the guy who runs the website that sells them asking him about fitment on a t309 S3 and he's going to talk to the guys that make them in England to ask if they've ever put one on a S3 before. Obviously it will fit the headlight part, but I'd like to know just how handy I'll have to be in order to mount it. I'd like a small fairing that completely encircles the headlight, not one that just sits on top like LongRoadHome has. If anyone has any examples of this, that would be great. Thanks!

Hi there..nice bike, the headlight fairing you are looking at is very similar to the one Sprint Manufacturing in the UK sell for the early spedd triples...take a look at their sight and you'll see..;-)
If the higher pegs do cause a long term problem you could remount the foot pegs in the lower position, this is already there..it's just blanked off with a plastic plug, you would however need to use the gear change & brake extension arms from a Sprint Sport/Trident or Sprint.

Congrats on the new bike. It looks great. Just bought it and already thinking about mods--you'll fit right in.
BTW, here's a shot of the CRG bar ends I mounted on my RS--a bigger version of the pic in my avatar

I like the look of those ones a lot! Do they make them in a bigger size? Has that size worked fine for you? The stock mirrors are useful enough for me (although they do show a great deal of my arms). I stay as aware as possible as to the whereabouts of cars in other lanes, so the mirrors simply serve as a backup, not my primary means of checking lanes.
Where did you get those and for how much?

These are 3" mirrors. AFAIK, that's the biggest CRG makes. They work OK for me--they're convex so you get a wide angle view. This model is called their 'lanesplitter' because they fold back. I got them from a company called forward motion for about $70 each. If you do a search for CRG mirrors on Ebay, you'll run across them.

What do you guys think of this fairing for the Speed Triple? I just got off the phone with a distributor for them here in the U.S. He talked to the manufacturers in the U.K. and they said it would fit the S3 fine. The only modification necessary is dremeling the openings around the turn signal stalks depending on how close to the headlight I want the fairing mounted.
I was thinking of either black/clear visor or black/smoked.

Screens are for women and/or shirt lifters. I believe they may also be illegal in Minnesota.
