98 Sprint Sport

Hi all

I'm new to the world of biking and passed my test in April. I bought a 98 Sprint Sport with 6300 miles on the clock. I'm getting a feel for it now

Having read through a lot of posts on here and inspecting my bike I've found that the front forks are adjustable for compression and rebound.

My question is regarding the rear suspension. It has a dial on the side of the bike that only rotates one direction and has 4 settings. I presume this is a rebound adjuster. Near the top of the rear shock under the seat is another adjuster with a pipe running to the shock. This has a hex head and a viewing window with graduated markings from 1 to 5. Can anyone tell me what this adjuster does. I turned it in the direction marked increase until it wouldn't move any further and the suspension feels a lot firmer. Is this a preload adjuster?

I appreciate any feedback.

Here is a picture:

Steve,
Howdy, and Welcome aboard!! Good lookin' Sprint there!
Yep, that's the remote preload under the seat and rebound adjuster on the side. Apparently, you didn't get the owners manual with the bike. I'd try to get one if poss. Also, get a good manual(Haynes, Factory) if you plan on doing the maint yourself. Also, fill out the rest of your info so we know where in the world your at.

Happy Trails!

Thanks for getting back to me. Do you know what the viewing window on the remote adjuster shows? I wound the adjuster several turns looser and it doesn't move?

Hi Steve..

If you keep winding the adjuster you should see some movement in the window...? Most folk tend to run the rear shock fairly firm.

Haynes says..
Preload rear
Solo riding firmer 4
Rebound
Solo riding firmer 4, standard 2-3

Front forks
Preload
Solo riding firmer 4, standard 5, softer 6
Rebound
Solo riding firmer 4, Standard 6, softer 9
Compression
Solo riding firmer 3, standard 6, softer 8

Front forks are adjusted from counting the number of clicks out from fully wound in..

Clean old bus you have there...6K is like new !!!!

Hi Steve, welcome and congratulations on your purchase, very nice indeed. 6k miles in ten years is amazing.

The rear shocks on these things are not brilliant and tend to shag out but with that mileage you won't have to worry about it for a while.
In fact, you won't have to worry about anything much for a while except ride and enjoy!

Cheers,

Roden

Thanks loads for the info guys.

If I keep winding it when it feels like it's stopped will it keep turning and the indicator move? I don't want to damage the adjuster. It is showing 3 at the moment.

On the front shocks is the upper adjuster on top of the forks the rebound or compression?

I really appreciate all your help.

Top is rebound (the brass screw ) bottom is compression. Preload is the larger ally flat sided adjuster that the rebound screw sits in.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback.

How do I replace the headlights? Do I need to remove the whole fairing?

Headlights are standard H4 bulbs, I uprated mine to Bosch Zenon, you can reach in under the fairing and do the job or remove the fairing...I had removed the fairing to do other jobs so did the bulbs as well, you need to pull the plug off the rear of the bulb pull off the rubber boot, remove the spring clip, lift out old insert new and then reassemble.

Headlights are better than the single one on the Speed Triple and the upgrade enhances that.

Alright there Steve,
Very tidy looking ride you got yourself. If you're changing out your headlights I'd whip the fairing off first. Doesn't take long and you can see what you're doing better.
Get some miles on that bike!
