Idle curiosity... Entire 955 motor?

So I'm pretty sure I know the answer, it's probably beyond me, but...

Has anyone put a 955i motor into a T3 bike? I know there's that Belgian "T309" Speed Triple that has a T3 motor in a T509 body, but I want to go the other way.

Cheers,
-Kit

Hmmm, why not? You'll have to fabricate some new motor mounts. Then would you run it with carburetors?

One of the better transplants that I've seen is a Honda 750/4 engine in a BSA Rocket 3 frame...

Hi Kit,

I could understand going 309 into a 509 frame, what, with the added rigidity that the 309 frame lacks. The great thing about the 309 frame though is its clean look, its all motor, nothing in the way.

How close are the mounts I wonder?
Imagine a 955 with FCR's and a sweet 3 into 1.

I'm guessing that once the RS is back on the road you will have a spare 955 mill kicking around the place, the possibilities.....

Cheers,

Roden

Okay, sounds like it's probably more complicated than I can handle. Maybe I'll just eBay the motor if the bloody mechanic ever finishes the swap.

Kit,

Was that hole made from the inside out or the outside in? Wouldn't that engine provide a set of 955 liners and pistons to stick in an 885 lump?

Bummer, all I see are dead bikes on your bike list.

Marlin,

Bummer, yes. Major, major bummer!

The hole was made from the outside; the motor ran with a temporary patch at the shop. I'm under the impression that I want pistons & liners from a first-gen 955 to upgrade the 885, but the budget's pretty well shot so I'm not at all sure I'm going to do that.

Cheers,
-Kit

Kit,

That hole is in the sump, correct? Are the engine internals still good? If so, you may be able to remove the sump and everything attached to the sump and take it to a GOOD welding shop and have a plate TIG welded to the underside of the hole to seal it up permanently. Yes, it's cast aluminum, but a good welder should be able to patch it up no prob. That should be a whole lot cheaper than a new motor or at least a fix till funds avail for an up-grade.

Thanks, Erv. Insurance covered a salvage motor, so this one will be a spare.
