100/55w Halogens in a Sprint?

Was at the local parts store today picking up a set of struts and shocks for the Turbo Volvo (IPD'ed). The owner was admiring the Sprint (1998 Sprint Exec) and asked if I had put in higher wattage bulbs yet. He has 100/55w halogens (I used to use them in rally cars, not "really legal" but "really bright..."). Anyone use them in the Sprint? As I just had an idiot do the "look thru you" deal last early this week (see recent comment about new back tire...sigh), I'm thinking about putting a pair into the Sprint, but not sure if the electrics can handle the extra wattage. I can lash up a relay (looking at a 20a relay as I type this) and wire directly to the battery, but it would be nice to keep things stock. Any comments are appreciated! (um...on topic?? Saying "any comments" around here opens a large can of worms.....!!)

I'm interested in this answer too. Wouldn't the stock relay handle the extra wattage? Back in my sports car days we ran 100/80w which is what I'd probably do here since so much time is spent on low beam. If you're going to be illegal why not go all out?

I put a Narva Plus 30 globe in my S3. Better, brighter light without extra current draw.A good, legal comnpromise.

These are the business IMHOPhilips GT150 bulbs
They remain 55/60w but are 50% brighter than standard with a very clear white light. Apparently they emit no UV rays so wont bugger plastic lenses, dont get stupidly hot and are robust compared to higher wattage bulbs. Cool as hell really Helps you to see what your going to run over, or hop into you better as well

Hmmm....thanks for the tip. I've got the Sylvanias installed which do well, but was looking for that "extra advantage." I'll check out the Philips. As for the other comments, I'd probably go with a heavy duty relay....I don't mind running wires, but I DO object to replacing burnt wires!

There is a lot of information concerning this in the mod and shop forum.

The general consensus was that they do not do well with the higher wattage bulbs. It tends to fry the harness when it finally goes. I'd run them through a relay if you really want those bulbs.

OK, I lied. It is not in the Mod and Shop forum. I just did a search and cannot find what I'm looking for. I don't remember where the info is. But, I do remember discussing this topic before with the end result being that using the brighter bulb was too much of a strain on the harness.

Thanks for looking for it. If I do the mod, I'll go with a relay and direct wiring as I did with the Fiamm horns. Right now I have the Sylvania Ultrabright 60w bulbs....they seem to do a decent job, but extra light is always appreciated (especially with the tall, horned rats we have here in abundance...deer).
