Light switch conversion from US to Euro

My bike is originally from Cal and it doesen`t have "main switch" for driving lights,
when ever ignition is turned on also driving light goes on. And place for switch above start button is blind.

Can I only replace old swicth with new one or is there some difference also in loom?

Hi aje,

I just had a look at my wiring diagrams and couldn't find any reference to a Cali model, all models are shown with a light switch.

With the headlight being hard wired, fitting a switch would mean rewiring to make it work. As long as the switch is switching a relay and not carrying the full current of the headlight, it will be ok.

How did a California model come to be in Finland I wonder?

Cheers,

Roden

That's such a good question, I just went out and pulled the switch box apart on my '02 Trophy to have a look-see. It looks like you need the switch and wire loom(wire loom may come with the switch?). Don't know exactly where the other end plugs into, but I do have a few unused plugs behind the headlights, so I would think maybe one of those? I can't see Triumph making completly different wiring harnesses just for N. America(Fed law requires headlights on all the time without being able to turn them off), but I could be wrong.

Looking at the parts fiche, it seems likely that swapping in a Euro switch will just work. (RH switchgear with light switch is 2040130-T0301; US w/o switch is 2040132-T0301.)

That being said, there were 4 different harnesses for Tridents. The one for 12195 & below would never have gone into a Speed Triple, but the others are the same. There is one for all markets, one for CA 36658 & below, & another for CA 36659 & up. Hopefully, the changes are elsewhere...

Cheers, HTH,
-Kit

Interesting Kit, the Haynes wiring diagrams does make a reference to a CA variant but the difference is some extra pollution control stuff, it doesn't show the headlight as hard wired and missing its switch.

Erv, R/H switch block should be plugged in to the main loom, this plug would carry start/kill, brake and light switch, if fitted. If the headlight is hard wired with no switch, simply unplugging the old switch and replacing it with the new might not work, unless Triumph got clever and put a loop on the switch side of that connector. I can't tell from my diagrams though. I don't think any spare plugs hanging around will be related to the headlights.

Of course, I have been known to be wrong!

Cheers,

I put a UK headlight switch on my 95 Trident. It fit right up with no issues. Even the raw switch and harness will fit in the US housing once you pop the blank out (but no markings on the outside of the US housing). I leave the light off for starting and such.

It has one plug (in the nacelle) and was a direct replacement. Maybe one of the UK breakers (triumphant, spring mfg) might offer insight.

Thanks mates,

I happen to have connections to one Finnish guy who lives in States and makes his living by buying vehicles etc stuff what people needs here around, and ships forward.
Cargo costs aren`t so bad if there comes several bikes in same sea container.
My bike has came from San Diego, it had only 17tmil on, BUT slightly damaged to right side.
Otherwise it was in quite neat condition. Still insurance company had acquited it.
I have also bought one Porsche that way.

I just purchased swicth for 5 Pounds via Ebay, not bad..
hope it is only plug&play thing.

In Cali modell theres solenoids in breather hoses comming from tank and carbs,
maybe difference in wiring loom is related to those?

(I have cleaned up my bike from those and all other non-pollution gizmos )

Wink

Since 1975 the US has required motorcycles to have constant headlights. Several, of my previous bikes were converted with Euro spec start/kill/lights switches. I don't recall having any wiring issues, since all that was done is a switch was added inline on the light circuit.
I do enjoy the flash -to-pass switch on my 98 S/E, that is a rare extra not found on most Japanese motorbikes.

best to all

Robin

There was jumps in "US" connector.
