out of interest...
The speed triple I bought as salvage and have repaired and am running about on and enjoying turns out to have had 11 previous owners... dirty old girl!
Anyway, I thought as a '94 early frame number series it'd have 5 gears. It has six. What six speed motors might have been fitted as I assume nobody would've fitted the sixth gear unless it's simple and there was a good reason for doing so.

Not so! When my sprag went south on my 5 speed S3, I had them, while they were 'in' there, put in the sixth gear - as did many. Chances are, if it's a black engine, it's got the right cams in it - then expect yer main jets to be in the 125 realm and that being so I imagine you have a mid cam'd engine, possible the original but maybe she took an engine from a donor '96 S3(6) or Daytona, even a Super 3 but I think you'd notice that!

interesting... the motor's black alright. I've had the carbs apart and it's been fitted with a dynojet kit and runs pretty well with it - I didn't take the mains out, but Dynojet have their own markings different to Mikuni, etc anyway I think. When I bought the machine from the salvage yard it was advertised & sold as a Trident (he he he) and I checked the frame number with Triumph to have it confirmed as a speed triple. I think I'll check the motor's numbers and call Hinckley again and see what's what. I think you're right about the Super 3 - the bike feels 90 - 95tops HP and doesn't spin up too fast. I assume their was lighter pistons, crank or rods in the Super 3?

The SuperIII had different cams and a cosworth designed head.

Stock, an S3 is about 91-ish HP, loosened up though - 94 ish - maybe with a jet kit. The Super 3 is 99+ at the rear - somehow though I don't think you have that engine. Put some 39mm FCR's on her and be done with it!

I don't think I'd go any further with "tuning" the S3, I've an aprilia road and suzuki trackbike for more speed and handling, but after initial trepidation with the weight and length of the S3 it really does respond well to a firm hand and positive input with cornering. It's surprised me that it's really quite keen to corner. The grunt's fine for what the bike is and I reckon I'd just be messing about for the sake of it if I tried to go any further, but if something comes along at a bargain price....
any idea what carbs/make/other models fitted to?

Yes, they are surprisingly fun to ride well. Should do about anything you should care to get away with on the street. Though obviously not your best choice for a track bike with your Aprilia and Zook parked about. Congrats on the addition of the S3 to your Stable.

Are you saying that they can simply fit the sixth gear to an older 5 speed box?Is it that easy?
