Coils, Wires and Plugs

A few questions: First, does anyone know of any good after market wires for the T3's? Second, what do you think about plug heat range? Factory calls for 9's but everyone around here only carries 8's (in the NGK's that is). I have been running 8's so long I can't remember if there is a difference. As for coils I have read everything on the site and looked online and it appearrs as though Nology is the only way one can go. Is there a better performing coil out there?

By the way I am just thrilled to death that I have found this forum. I thought I was the only freak that actually liked the Trident 900. As far as I know I am the only one in the state that still rides one. I bought mine new in '96 and have 23k on it. It sat up for 4 years while I was over seas. That was after my 18 day trip from South Georgia to Victoria, BC.

Sorry about OT...

What are symptons when coil is going to break down?
Do they stop working suddenly or is there some warnings comming?

(Mine feels sometimes for~2sec like run out of gas but then evrything is OK)

Well from what I have read the biggest indicator seems to be a loss of power and throttle response above 4k RPM. Also you can look for plug fouling. However plug fouling can be a symptom of many things. I suspected that my #1 coil was bad so I switiched it with #3. Now I am 90% positive it is bad but I also suspect that my carbs need to be adjusted. I am going by what I have read so if anyone wants to chime in with experience feel free. I am strictley a parts changer and am not good with diagnosis and fine tuning.

With the tank off, try cleaning the oxidation/dulling on the LT terminals on the coils and also the spades that connect to them, making sure the fit is firm. Some might use a little dielectric grease here ( http://stason.org/TULARC/vehicles/vw...d-on-what.html ). Perhaps that coil is going south! #3 coil typically, if failing will send the Tach haywire - it'll start going erratic on you, fluctuating up and down and at idle maybe a little rough, with a tendency to die after being unresponsive! The crankshaft sender can give similar indications of failure but by 'making good' those LT connectors, a common issue with them you can concentrate on the others possible causes.

Strangely the Triumph service manual says NGK DPR 9EA-9 is stock issue, though the NGK site http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/part_fi...=2564&type=reg recommends this! Odd! But there are sets(DPR9) for $7 on ebay!

http://www.stealth316.com/2-sparkplugtech.htm

The plug caps themselves actually seal out the elements from the plug cavity - which has always made an alternative rather difficult to source. 'Suppose you could fabricate something from A+B rubber molds and use screw on caps or whatever! http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductL...Category=3347B

Would a motorcycle coil work as an electric guitar pickup do you think!??

Bad Monkey,
Welcome to the forum and no, you're not the only one with a Trident in Georgia or Gwinnett Co. My friend Jeff has a 95 Trident and he lives in Lawrenceville.

Thanks for the advice trypcil. I ordered some 9's from Autozone yesterday so we will see how those work out. I don't want to drop the $210 on the new coils just yet so I am going to try cleaning up the terminals and the grease you suggested. I am due for an oil change in a couple weeks so I'll do everything then.

I had no idea there was another Trident rider so close to me with the same color bike even. I have been riding around here for the last five years and haven't come across anyone with anything similar. Thanks for the heads up D'Charlie. I'll keep an eye out.

I was told by Sprint that 8's are slightly 'softer' than 9's, so aid cold starts?? My bike starts/runs great with them, but I think its more to do with the valves just been re-shimmed.

DPR8-EA9 are one heat range hotter than DPR9-EA9 so shouldn't be any probs using them. See attached breakdown for NGK plugs.

Happy Trails!!

My problem resolved

I noticed my tachometer was going haywire while riding on the freeway last week on my 96 Sprint. The needle looked as though it had come disconnected from the spindle it was on and was being blown here and there by wind or something. (I knew there was no wind in there but that's what it looked like.)

Anyway the bike seemed to perform ok,.. and it was hard to reproduce the crazy tach movement but it would happen mostly around 6k.

I got home and instead of posting for advice, I searched for tach. I found this and a couple of other posts which spoke to my problem. in general there were discussions about Gll, PVL and Nology coils/

Trypcil,(Thanks mate) made some compelling points about conductivity of the connections at the coils, and that the PVL coils were actually the preferred Nology coils.

So, I propped up my tank and grabbed some steel wool and began to scrub each male connector at the coil. They did not look so bad, but shined up quite a bit after a little work. I noticed that my coils and wires were marked PVL and I thought.. Ach, I have za goot cherman schpark-en-heimers great! The coil wires also had PVL printed on them.
I used a needle nose pliers to pinch each female connector right through the plastic housing. The housings over the connectors did not seem to mind a bit no splitting or cracking.

I started her up and vooom... nice and steady, great power, and Tachycardia now resolved.

Saved a few bucks in the process.
Mike
