Trident 900 Carb Problems

I have a 98 Trident 900, and it runs really well, but I have an issue with tickover. Whenever I pull up after a run, it will just die. If I adjust the tickover, and set it correctly at idle, when I pull up after a run, it will tick over at between
3 and 5k revs for over a minute before it slowly falls. The throttle is not sticking as I have checked this, any ideas what else it may be?

Hi Gaj,

are you setting the idle with the engine hot or cold? I found my bike to be most stable if I set the idle to around 1500rpm when the engine's hot, i.e after riding for a few minutes, rather than with the bike sitting warming up on the drive. If I set the idle with the bike cold, it tends to run as you describe when it warms up. In my experience, the stickiness of the idle adjuster doesn't help! Incidently, does any one else know if there's a way to lube the idle adjuster without stripping the carbs?

Other issue could be an air leak - are there any cracks in any of the rubber manifolds around the carbs or airbox? This could lead to funny fueling and performance.

I see that your bike is a 1998. Which carburetor brand does it have? How many miles are on the bike?

Thanks for the welcome, it has a Mikumi (sp!) carb on it, and has just covered 40,000 miles, when I adjusted the tickover, it was when the engine was nice and warm. I am right in thinking the tickover adjustment screw is the one sticking out on the left hand side.

Yup your right on that....

Drain the float bowls (you may need to do it twice)...it's easy enough to do and is one of the first things to eliminate. This will flush out any crap that may be lurking. Small screws at the base of the carbs...try to put a rag or better still someting to divert the fuel down and away from the bike....oh and do it on a cold engine too just to be sure ay..
