Track day pressures

I have heard conflicting opinions on what pressures to run. I have tried in vain to get some info from Avon. I have AV49, 50SP's. Opinions range from 24-30 for the front and 24-32 for the rear. Regardless of manufactuer, what do you think the best pressures are? Don't worry, if I bin it again I will not try to hold anyone responsible..................

it's going to depend a lot on the track, track temp, air temp, tyre compound, bike set-up and rider style... but putting that to one side at present.. on my trackbike I run 31psi front and 29/30 rear that's with pirelli supercorsas. An accurate guage is important. If possible ask the advice of a tyre technician/fitter at the track you're at (if one's there) or telephone Avon (if they're not too scared of being sued over there!) and ask them. You want less pressure than the road because the tyres will get hot on track - very hot. But you don't want them so soft that they distort and cause poor handling.

go to the track with a gauge and pump. go for 31f & 30r to start. do your sighting/warm up laps and feel the machine and what it is doing, but do not push the bike.

I went with 32-30 today at Texas World Speedway. I tip toed for the first two sessions (first day since my off). Bike was planted in the corners, just a bit twitchy under braking. So, to answer my own question is 32-30. It feels good to have the mojo back

Wiayeman - I'm not sure about what pressure to run in your Avons but it sounds like you're on to it with lower pressures for more heat and grip for the track. While I've never seen any Avon tire represented at a track day or race day, I have seen Dunlop, Michelin and Pirelli and all of 'em with good advice for what works best with their brands.

Also, you mentioned twitchy under braking. What fork set up are you using with regards to the amount of fork above the top yoke...you have a '96 S3, right??

My suspension is bone stock. I only recently got back into track days. I do not have the knowledge to work out what is causing my bike to do what. I have a difficult time working out what each adjustment does, cause and effect?.................

That's fine.

I would be glad to share my '96 suspension upgrade findings. I should be done with it all by this next weekend. Yours is a '96, right?

Correct. I will take any help I can get. It is a humbling experience to go to a track day on race weekend..........

Good 'runnings' with getting your S3 back to straight. Let me know when you're ready for some suspension part #'s ...while I'm still waiting for Spokane Raceway Park to reopen for business & finally do MY first track day.

what bike do you have? I just bought a 95 Speed Triple...bone stock standard and will take to track for fun. Just put Avon Viper Sports on it. I have never take a bike this old and heavy to a track day, so appreciate any suggestions you can give me for a)tire pressures a)other mods to make it practical for track days. thanks, JIM

Jim. I used 32 - 30 last week and only pushed the front a few times. I have AV49, 50SP's. They seem to take a while to warm up, so I would advise to take it easy the first couple of laps. I have some Viper Supersports I'm about to spoon on so I am looking forward to seeing how your sports do.

You will be exhausted by the end of the day. By the 4th of 6 sessions I was feeling the effects of wrestling the old train around.

Take some extra levers just in case. You can buy the brake and clutch levers off ebay for less than $30 for the pair. Just look for the Kawasaki ZX9's. No one will have an extra at the track.

The only other thing you may want to invest in is a steering damper.

You will definitely be the only T3 out there. Let us know how you get on.
