Carbs in, carbs out, then in, out and in again!

Got around to reinstalling the carbs on my 93 Sprint today. What with the trouble I had getting them out past the airbox and the homework I've done on here, it wasn't something I was looking forward to!

The throttle cable didn't seem to want to go back into its cam but I got lucky with the waggling-in-vacinity-and-hoping method. Choke cable was much easier and generally the whole thing went better than I expected.

Then I attempted to refit the airbox...

DOH!

So, carbs out again, airbox in and refit the carbs. This time one of the choke plungers somehow detached itself and a couple of deep breaths were required but once again, job done.

But I'd forgotten to reattach the throttle cable. Oh for f*ck's sake.

Carbs half out and this time the throttle cable really, really didn't want to go back into its cam. Deep breaths not working this time, I went for the swearing loudly approach and just before hitting it with a hammer and putting it on Ebay as a non runner, it slipped home.

Total time from carbs on bench to carbs on bike 4 bloody hours!

Thanks for being here for me to share.

Is there another method?

Plenty of swearing here too...took the pipes off to replace today and the nuts had rusted badly...one really bad would not grip a 13mm socket..that is until I hammered a 12mm one onto it !!

Air box and carbs are my next job I feel I have a suitable range of swear words..with maybe one or two in reserve...and boy when they come out they just get repeated none stop.....

Last time I had carbs out,I replaced the rubbers with Trident ones. They are shorter than the Daytonas (2-3mm) and do make re-fitting easier. I have removed the two plastic lugs that support the box, this helps .

I haven't had the pleasure yet but I am looking forward to it in a perverse kind of way.

The split airbox looks like a good mod....

Good to hear mate but don't forget volume is an acceptable substitute for variety!

Looked good to me too but I knew in my heart I would just butcher the thing and end up buying a new one...

when I bought my speed triple and stripped it back that rebuilding of the box/carbs nearly had me on the phone to triumph to curse their design department. Why the box couldn't be flat with bolt on ducts is beyond me - would've been easier to manufacture too!

nightmare! well done for persevering.

I did this recently after several exercises getting the carbs in and out over the years. I cut the rear section of the airbox in half and used some split tubing as a gasket - and it makes pulling the carbs reasonably easy. One needs some care to get a nice straight cut. I used a dremel and it wasn't perfect but with the gasket it is fine, but I have no access to a band saw which would have worked nicely.

With the back split the airbox can go off first, and on last. The extra room makes fiddling with the cables easier.

Next time I pull the carbs, I'm going to try leaving the throttle cable connected to the carbs and remove it from the grip. The tank has got to be off anyway and routing the cable it is very easy, at least on a Trident. I am always afraid of breaking the head off the adjuster at the carb with the right angle section (damhik).

I wish I had done this mod years ago.
