I had the same problem last Summer after 27500 trouble free miles. I ended up checking that the petcock was OK before proceeding to rebuild the carbs. After new fuel lines, vent tubes, a vacuum line, airbox/airfilter and 3 float assemblies (Mikuni), the bike is running as good as ever. Total cost was $347
FYI - Fact: I still have the original plug wires, pickup coil and ignition coils and my bike dyno-ed at 93.32 HP and 55.98 ft-lbs torque 3 monthsbefore the carb rebuild.

Reason: don't waste $$'s on ignition stuff. Test it first!
