Fuel pipe routing

Does anyone know the correct routing for the fuel pipes from the petcock to the carbs (91 Trident 900). I'm trying to connect mine by bringing both up behind the leftmost and central carbs - they don't look long enough to reach any other way. Does the routing really matter?

Also, both pipes are connected by means of a thinner metal pipe about half way along their length. Is this normal? I don't understand why it's not just two longer pipes that disconnect at the petcock when you remove the tank.

I've got the two vent hoses pointing downwards, in front of and between the carbs.

Oh, and please don't suggest that I remove the carbs again and fit new lengths of pipe...

Doesn't matter how long they are, as long as they don't have any kinks in them. Don't know about the metal pipes in yours. Sounds like someone stuck them in there to fix a crack or something. Your vent hoses are in the right place.

Thanks. I'm learning loads from this bike and this forum, it's starting to feel like the maintenance side of things is at least as much fun as riding.
