how fast?

ok guys i just completed my 97 speed "trophy" conversion and took it for a cruise yesterday. I was impressed on how much the weight reduction from no fairings on my trophy improved performance. almost like a new bike, but I cannot break 125mph. what reasonable upgrades can i do to my "new" bike to make it perform like a real speed triple. I ride with some guys who have mostly jap crotch rockets and I can hang well with them until those **** straight aways!

Do you have clip-ons fitted?

I stripped the fairing off my Sprint and turned it to a Speed Triple style. The lower and more forward position provided by the clip-ons makes for better aerodynamics for sure. On a naked bike though, you will struggle with the wind at high speed. A fly screen may break the wind and help a little.

Standard performance upgrades are exhaust, high flow air filter and re-jetting, the latter takes some amount of knowledge of carbys and a lot of tinkering. Access to a dyno helps too.

If you go beyond this in search of more ponies, it will mean breaking into the mill, eg cams, head work etc. A three into one exhaust with the right jetting is a good place to start and the weight reduction is considerable.

Let us know your current set up...

Cheers,

Roden

Roden:

i have clipons but it is mounted on the top yoke right now because it doesn't have a rise in them like yours. I will try with it under the top yoke to see how i like them. I have been watching your sprint conversion and have to say you were my inspiration(thanks by the way).
As far as my mods go I am pretty stock. I have a drilled out stock can and some nology coils. I am on a budget and looking for some new cans. I would like to try out some new camshafts if I ever run in to a pair but hard to come by in my part of town. I am thinking of re jetting but wanted to wait till i can get some other parts first.

What was your toughest part in your conversion? Mine was the wiring. I pretty much rerouted all the wires to the rear of the bike. I wasn't prepared for that when I stripped the bike. Who would of thought all relays, fuse box and igniter would be stored in the front fairing. At least I think the weight distribution is much better now and my front forks doesn't feel so spongy minus that extra 60 or 70 lbs(my estimate) loaded on the front. One definite upgrade that i will have to do is a steering stabilizer. when wide open in first and second my front end loosens right up barely touching the pavement. Any recommendations where I could pick up a decent stabilizer?

K_dencuz: Welcome, & congrats on your conversion! Do keep in mind that your cams are already the same as Speed Triple cams & you'll need Super III cams if you want to upgrade. Personally, I prefer to think of it as "I have Daytona cams in my Trident."

Cheers,
-Kit

Go for a turbo. There were 3 kinds of cams for the carbed triples: mild cams for the Tiger & cruisers, medium for Daytona, Speed Triple, Sprint, Trident, & Trophy, & hot for the Super III.

Kit is right, when I suggested to look at the cams, I should have qualified that.

Really, the first place to start for performance is exhaust/jetting. There is heaps of info on this site on the subject and I'm sure Trypcil will pop his head up soon

I haven't done anything in that area because quite honestly, I am more than satisfied with the performance of my Sprint. She runs and idles well, throttle response is good, no flat spots to speak of. I'll only make changes if a good deal comes up on a three into one.
I just lope along and take in the view, I'm not trying to keep up with anyone.

My wiring issue was nothing like yours. On my bike, most of the electrics that you had to relocate are already under the seat. The headlight relays and a bunch of wiring went into the headlight shell, another bundle is snug between the headlight and instruments and a third bunch is tucked under the headlight. You can't really see any of it unless you look close but I'd like to tidy it up a bit more yet. I really want twin bug eyes, next mod I think.

Try your clips under the top yoke, there will be a difference in the aerodynamics. I am actually contemplating removing the risers and getting down lower again although I think my tennis elbow might prohibit this!

At the end of the day, these mills are soulful and you don't have to be doing a gazillion mph to really enjoy the experience. Just short shift through the gears, wind on the throttle a bit harder each time, listen to the whine from the gearbox, the induction noise and the exhaust note....let the crotch rockets go, you can be in your own 3 cylinder world

Cheers,

Roden

roden i did the bug eyes on mine with a dual 4inch lamps. I got good comments so far. I need to remount my gauges because my bracket hangs a bit over the lamps not giving the look i wanted. i did use the t509 pod but i found trophy gauges don't mount right in like your sprints did. i had to heavily butcher the pod to get it to work. i really want to get a set of koso gauges but 400 dollars is a bit much. you are right about keeping up with the crotch rockets i shouldnt be going that fast anywayz. i was just jealous when they passed me up but i caught up in the twisties and managed to pull ahead of some of them. i guess i just got more usable power than they do. cant have everything i guess. I do have a set of sprockets that i will be throwing on as soon as my chain riveter comes in. I know i am going in the wrong direction with a 17/46 combo from a 17?or 18?/43 not sure yet, but i always wanted a wheelie monster. I guess that will justify a second ride right, really could use a daytona 675!(over my wifes dead body).

Hey mate, you got any pics? I'd like to see those lights. Are they S3 lights?

Love to see it...
