Wheel repainting

Hi,

My daytona 900 1993 has the old 5 spoke wheels. These look ok from a distance but closer you can see that the paint had been rubbed off on the corners.

So I would like to repaint them, not sure if I will fork out for powder coat or just spray them. I plan to go for graphite rather than repainting them black just because it doesnt show the oil and dirt quite so badly.

Anyway onto my question, I have heard some horror stories about getting the brake disks off and obviously I will need to remove both. Does any one have any good sugestions on how to achieve this without shearing the bolts and what to do if I do shear the bolts. Or should I just mask really carefully and leave them on - or not bother at all :-(

Regards,
Andrew

Hi

I had the rotors off the front of my sprint, the bolts were really tight but came off OK, I used a socket mounted tool with an extension and a Tee bar, I laid the wheel down on a carpet, made sure the tool was fully engaged, leant on the tee bar and pulled, they all came away no problem. If the bolts do shear then you will have to drill them and try to use an 'easy out' on them, as I say mine were tight but all came away first try

Hope this helps

the bike I bought as salvage had very worn discs that needed replacing. the bike had had 11 previous owners in 12 years! the bike looks like it'd always been kept outside but the disc bolts still came free using the careful technique sprintive50 says. Is your disc thickness ok? if not it might be worth taking the wheels to a local engineer who'll whip out the bolts (drill and extract if necessary) for cash.

I've just stripped the paint off the wheels of my trackbike with homebase paint stripper (similar to nitromors). you just paint on and 15 minutes the paint lifts off. I've not donw this with my triumph wheels though I will because they are pitted and flaked from road salt. you'll have to have the tyres and valves off to do the job properly. another route may be to take the wheels to a local painter/bead or sand blaster to get the paint off properly.

I ran my Trident with 5 rotor bolts on each side from the time I put on the 6-pots 'til the motor seized. There is still one broken bolt in each side of the wheel, & I can't even begin to tell you how many easy-outs I've broken or drill bits (right- and left-handed) I've worn out trying to remove them.

If I was doing it again, I would heat each bolt with a propane torch & allow it to cool, then drip some penetrating oil onto them & leave them overnight. Next day, I would use an impact wrench to remove them.

Cheers, HTH,
-Kit
