I owned a 93 900 Trident for several years and it proved a great bike. Only a few things spring to mind... check sprag/starter clutch. Most should have been sorted with a recall, mine missed it,but if there is an inspection plate(square plate) above clutch, they are not difficult to renew. Front suspension is soft, and brakes are not the best. Igniters can fail (as they do on other bikes)but are cheaper than new from a breakers. Check fork seals.Wheels can corrode. Otherwise a great bike with a superb, flexible engine, probably the best of the t3 range. Super111 is faster but not so flexible. Important to keep battery fully charged.

'96 Trident

I've got a '96. Good & bad:

Bad: fuel hoses routed badly at the factory (easy fix), kinda lame front suspension, brakes are so-so (better...acceptable with SS lines).

Good: awesome motor (great with K&N, pipe and re-jet), very comfy riding position.

Riding: Great commuter, good sport-distance bike (I've done 13hr days), good in sweepers, a bit wonky in the real tight stuff though.

Overall, I think it's a really good bike an am glad to have it.

Good - fairly quick, really gets going as you go through 6000revs. Smooth running, no vibration, so not tiring to ride.

Bad - diabolical petrol consumption (Keihin carb'ed bikes are supposed to be more economical than Mikuni carb'ed bikes). Black paint (powder coating) on the engine chips / cracks and comes off in flakes. Large turning circle due to limited fork 'rotation'.

Mediocre - high (ish) seat, so possibly not good if you're less than 5' 10". Headlight not very good; main beam isnt much higher than dip beam and neither are very effective. 2 piston / sliding body calipers tend to seize unless regularly cleaned. Mine ('96) has braided stainless brake hose as standard, but its covered in a black sheath so it isnt obvious.

There are a few regular issues with these bikes, ignition pick up coils and HT coils being two of them, but they are well use-able as working bikes.

Best Trident

Go for as late a bike as possible.
I've done 51,000 miles on my 97 Trident with no major problems.
Suspension linkage and swing arm pivot has 5 grease nipples, just pump new grease in until it displaces the old.Regular oil and filter changes and have valve clearances checked every 12,000 miles.
I replaced the front calipers and discs with Speed Triple 4 pots and bigger discs.
This is a big improvement on the original set up.
Thicker fork oil firms the front slightly.
Great engine and comfortable riding position.
