I have a 1994 Trident, that when the motor is under load, (eg. when you pull out to pass a car and wind the throttle full on) it does not make any power. It is just "flat", it doesn't even miss or sputter like it is dropping a cylinder, it doesn't slow down, and it doesn't try to pick up power untill you roll the throttle off to about a third then you can slowly wind the throttle and it is away.
Almost like you hit some sort of "power limiter".
This happens no matter what gear you are in or what speed you are doing.

I have tried changing the coils and plug leads, also have tried it with the choke full on.

Before I get more in to looking at things and pulling what little hair left that I have out, I just thought (alright hoped *smile*) that some one who is on ths forum may have struck something like this before?

Regards,
Kelvin.

Hi NZrider

Has it been like this since you got it? If not, and it's a recent problem, then the following is rubbish!

Guesswork from the other side of the world, but it sounds like someone may have put huge main jets in to go with a loud pipe and then just put the original restrictive pipes back on to sell it.

The effect of main jets only starts being felt above half throttle when the mixture suddenly gets over rich and kills the power. Putting the choke on would make it worse.

I'm sure if anyone can see through this argument they'll let you know, but I would pull the carbs and check the main jets. While you're in there check for other stuff like blocked air filters & fuel lines, torn carb diaphrams, air leaks, etc. and change the plugs... you never know what you might find (and you might as well do it all at once, 'cos it's not that easy to get in there.. well not after my old Ducatis anyway)

Oversize main jets are the first thing that came to my mind also. Next came dirty air filter.

I perhaps missed out the most vital peice of information, I bought the bike over the phone and on photos, so had no idea of its history etc.

Anyway good news...The main jets were too large and the needles were on their uppermost setting, must of had an aftermarket (noisy) pipe on it before returning it to stock to sell.

Thankyou all for your input and guidance.

Regards,
Kelvin.
