Major Service

G'day all,

My Sprint ('98 Sport) just clocked over 70,000km and I promised myself I would do a major service at this point.
The bike is running great but I have no record of previous maintenance routines. Here's what I've got in mind:

Valve clearances
Oil and filter
New plugs
Coolant flush/change
New thermostat (the old one is ok but a long hot summer is approaching)
Air filter (if required)
Carb sync
Check coil/lead connections
Steering head bearing adjustment
Alternator cush rubbers/bolt (its got the rattle)

Is there anything else I should be doing whilst I've got the thing in bits?
These seem to be the main items of importance from what I've read.

Cheers and safe riding,

Roden

While you're flushing out the cooling system, check the hoses. If you have to replace them, the smaller hose that comes off the back side of the head and runs down to the thermostat housing is no longer available. Triumph changed to a different part number, which they say is the same hose but it's not. The new one is shorter and has a different bend in it. DAMHIK. I ended up taking mine to a local auto parts store and comparing it to the hoses they had in stock until I found one that would work.
It'd probably be time to flush the brake and clutch fluid too.

Thanks Seumas, I plan to check over the hoses carefully.
I do believe that my thermostat is located in the hose near the radiator neck.
I don't think it has a thermostat housing as such. Is mine different to yours?

I flushed all the hydraulics when I first got the bike, the clutch was full of gunk.

Cheers,

Roden

I was about to say the same thing about the thermostat being located in the big hose just behind the radiator. There's a checklist in the manual, but I haven't got it in front of me right now.

Cheers,
-Kit

I was thinking that was the thermostat, but looking at the pics on bikebandit, it looks like the water pump housing. Anyway, the hose would be part number 20 in this pic.

Thanks Seumas and Kit, that helps alot.

I like this Bikebandit mob, I haven't seen anything quite the same in Oz, at least where you can get a breakdown with part numbers.
Are they efficient?

I'm actually looking forward to getting into it and reading about everyones experiences and picking up the tips on this site has helped enormously!
I also know that if I get stuck, help is only a click of the keyboard away!

I've never used them, but it's nice having the drawings to look at. Just don't try to order anything from your local dealer with the part numbers on their website--they're not the same as Triumph's.

Flush the fluid

I'd flush the hydraulics and consider fitting stainless hydraulic lines.

Bikebandit is handy for looking up parts, but their part numbers are not Triumph part numbers. In addition they are very, very slow to ship in my limited experience. It often takes 3 weeks for a part to arrive, which is about the speed I do projects anyway so it may not be an issue.
