Tell us about your father's day!
G'day all,
I thought I might tell you all what I did on father's day!
Got up at 7am (thats a good sleep in for me) and got the Sprint warmed up.
My step son Niall and myself had been planning to have a ride in the morning and back by 2pm for a bbq.
I planned a 200km round trip to Picton via The Oaks.
Niall is on his learners and this was the first time he had ventured out of the suburbs and on to the joy of a winding country road. He is riding a sweet little Katana 250 which is really quite capable!
We cruised out through The Oaks and from there the run into Picton is great. Beautiful undulating countryside and gentle sweepers through open country and forest.
We all have memories of our first truly awesome riding day and hopefully Niall would remember this ride as just that!
We wended our way towards Picton and had another group of riders come up on us, the lead rider must have seen the "L" plate on Niall's bike and just eased up his pace and fell in behind him. We were spinning along at 100-110, a nice easy lick which wasn't towing him along too fast for his capabilities but was entertaining nonetheless.
A couple of the guys in the group behind us were playing go fast and swooped past us on a long downhill right hander. The precession proceeded in this way right through to Picton, I would look in my mirrors and see the headlights lined up behind me and Niall, following us through the corners like a long snake. Brilliant.
We all pulled up at the George the Fifth at the same time. They brew their own at this place so I just had to have a beer! Armed with a schooner of their light brew, (Niall on lemonade of course) we chatted to a couple guys, one on a 916 Duc and the other on a 600 Fazer. They were heading up to a lookout nearby and invited us along. We rode up to the lookout with the 916 taking up the rear, at one point he opened her up a bit and passed us. So nice to see such a lovely bike on song.
I was impressed with the Fazer, he darted away like a startled hare and already had his helmet off when we arrive at the lookout! A very smart and quick bike.
The view at the lookout was spectacular and very peaceful. The other two guys were pushing on so they said there farewells and we headed homeward for the BBQ.
During this ride I really got connected with the machine. Now I get it. It talks in its own special way. The slight whine pulling through the gears. The buzz through the grips, the deep, triple rumble from the exhaust. I duck my head behind the screen sometimes and listen to the song of the motor. I love it now.
We got home (after a short stop to fill up the tanks) and had a great bbq with all the kids around, had a few (quite a few) ales too.
Niall got home pumped, he had his first truly memorable day on a bike, we were still talking about it this morning and probably will for some time to come!
My day was the best in a long time and the Sprint played a part!
Tell us your Father's day story!
Cheers,
Roden
