Caliper rebuild kit for 98 Sprint Sport

It has come time to rebuild the calipers on my 98 Sprint Sport as the right front leaked all over my garage. I checked bikebandit and they list the caliper rebuild sela kit for ~$76 per side. That seems ridiculous for a couple of rubber seals. From reading several forums, it seems that the 4 piston calipers on my bike (same as the Daytona?) are the same as late model GSXR750's, but the Suzuki part is more like $30. Has anyone purchased rebuild kits from Suzuki. I'm not sure which year GSXR750 to check.
I don't mid supporting Triumph, but the price on the seal kits, just seems like gouging to me.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

A lot of the Triumph seals/o-rings/etc. are severely overpriced.

I don't know much about the 4-pot brakes, as mine came with twin pots & now has 6-piston Tokicos. That being said, it looks like the 1993 GSX-R 750 "P-model" seals *might* interchange. That's the only Gixxer 750 I could see that came with Nissin brakes, & they are 4-piston calipers.

HTH,

I looked on the Bikebandit microfiche (http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit...WP/1993/717672) and the caliper sure looks the same, even the casting design. I sure like the bikebandit prices better than the triumph prices, but it looks like the seals for the large pot are discontinued. I'm going to give the dealer a shot. If they sell them in single seals, I'll get 1 of each and try it. Seems worth the few bucks to find out.

I too have a newly acquired '98 Sprint Sport, front brakes are a bit mushy.

I've been reading through the threads from the past couple of years and it seems that a common upgrade is the 6 pot Tokicos from a ZRX. It would appear that you guys across the pond can pick them up for a song, like, less than a hundred bucks! So would it be a better outcome for you to upgrade rather than rekitting the old calipers?

Seems to me that the cost would be only a little more and you end up with decent brakes.

I'm on the lookout myself for some but they are not as plentiful nor cheap here in Oz.

Just a thought....

Welcome to the forum, Roden. You do have a point. I paid less than $100 for the calipers & fresh pads. (It was closer to $500 when all was said & done, but I started with twin pots so I had to replace my rotors & master cylinder as well. A month after I put 'em on, I stopped about 18" from an SUV that made a right in front of me, so I figure I'm ahead of the game now....)

Cheers,
-Kit

Thanks for the welcome Kit, I have read your posts with a lot of interest, always articulate and interesting.

I did read the thread on the brake upgrade and your close call with the SUV!
Its got me thinking that this will be the first modification I will do, just got to search the wreckers for a good pair.

I note that the ZRX1200 calipers are a straight swap, are these calipers common to any other bike? It would broaden my search if there are other bikes using the same gear.

(I hope this post doesn't constitute a hi-jack!)

Cheers

I'm the mod, & I don't mind too terribly much if threads wander occasionally.

The Tokico 6-pots on my bike happen to have come from a Z-Rex, but I can't remember off the top of my head whether it was an 1100 or 1200. Doesn't really matter that much, as all years of both displacements will work.

While I was looking at the GSX-R 750 fiche earlier, I noticed that the '94-('03? '04?) models also use the Tokico 6 piston units.

They're most commonly referred to as Hayabusa brakes. The 'busas moved to radial mounts around '04 or so, but up 'til then they used the 6-pots.

It looks like the Gixxer 1000s & 1100s of the same era also used 'em.

They were really popular calipers in their time, & they were used on a lot of sporty bikes.

HTH,
-Kit

Thanks Kit, thats a great help. My mate has a GSXR1000, I'll make some comparisons. I don't think I'll be able to pry them off him somehow!

The sun just popped out after 4 days of rain so I went for a quick blat.
It has just further cemented my decision to buy the Sprint...what a joy!

Mate, what time is it in NYC? 2.15 pm here in Sydney, you burning the midnight oil?

Cheers
