I am a new member of the forums as well as a new motorcyclist. I have just acquired a '96 Trident 900. The original owner had swapped the carbs out for some velocity stack style ones. The two body panels on either side of the carbs are gone along with the air box. I did not receive these items from the person I purchased the bike from. Do these body panels attach to the air box? I would like to replace them as I think it cleans the look of the bike up quite a bit. Thanks.

I think you might have some Keihin FCR carbs on the bike?

They are a HUGE improvement over the stock POS Mikuni BST Vacuum operated carbs.

The stock carbs are just junk.

Those Keihin Flat slides are pretty costly too, I think you got lucky.

The airbox is so frustrating to remove and replace, it makes people like me want to go Postal, so we remove it and go with pod filters on each carb.

Pods are real easy to work with...

If your bike has the Flat slides, with velocity stacks and no air filters, you can buy adapters from Sudco International to fit the air filters or even the stock airbox if you want.
You'll have to have the bike re-tuned if you make a change.

The pieces of body work your missing mount between the fuel tank and the side panels?
They're Stainless Steel and rivet onto the plastic side panels and should be easily remounted.
I've considered removing those pieces on the side panels on my bike, to make it easier to get to the carbs, but figured it was a little extreme and would let rain water get into my pod air filters.
When I'm tuning my bike, I just leave the rear body work off durring test rides to make it easier on myself.

Here is a couple comparo pics, so you can see the difference between the looks of the Keihin FlatCR's and the MikuniBST CV carbs.
This is the left side if the KeihinFCR, notice how they sort of slope back away from the Top end of the motor.

This is the right side of the MikuniBST's... Notice that they have black plastic tops on them that are destinctive.

Check out the body work on my bike.

Thanks for the information. I do have the Keihin FCR 39 carbs with K&N pod filters. I am glad to hear that these are a worthwile modification. The only other change to the bike has been the staintune pipes.

Hey Jason! Welcome!!

You should post a pic or two.

I have the 39 Keihins on my Super III and had a set of Staintunes on it. The only complaint I have is that the Keihins don't have a choke. It makes for an interesting start-up routine. It's not really a complaint, but it definitely adds character.

That's a good looking Trident FastBenson!

Hey thanks for the compliment.

I open the throttle about 5 times before turning over the engine, and give it some throttle as it turns over and it lights up.
The Accelerator pump gets some fuel in there, sort of like a choke would.
Takes a while to get it to idle or rev without stalling.

Is that the same routine you use?

I took a long time to figure out how to tune that accelerator pump down, it was flooding the bike good all the time.

I'm still trying to get the jetting spot on, but those carbs add some serious HP, and are real easy to work with.

Yes, I'll haul my bike up to the mountains to avoid the Interstate.

Yes, pump the gas, hit the starter, it barbles for a few seconds then repeat until it idles.
