Electrical problem - used battery charger to start

I posted in the Spped Triple thread- any help would be so much appreciated. I don't really know what I'm doing but need to get my bike running:

My solenoid would click when directly connected to the battery, but not when installed on the bike. A fresh battery did not help. I replaced the solenoid and all was well.

If I understand correctly the starter motor solenoid isnt operating when you press the starter switch? There are three switches that may inhibit the engine running, or starter solenoid operating. They are the neutral switch, the propstand switch and the clutch lever switch. Try some lubricant spray on the propstand switch and check it extends fully when the stand is retracted. Also spray the clutch lever switch, and try pulling the clutch lever in slightly while operating the starter switch.

It is also possible the contacts on the solenoid are dirty or loose, so worth a dismantle and clean with some fine sandpaper or emery cloth.

Wink

I agree with daveforty. Sometimes I have the same problem - pushing the starter buton, and starter don't go. Than I pull the clutch lever and starter goes on !

Thanks- yes, you are correct. The starter works as jumping the solenoid did make a spark and it turned over.

That's where I'm at - the only logical choices are the kill switch, the sidestand switch, and the clutch lever switch (and the starter button too). I was trying to predict which one was the most likely culprit - knowing that it worked before I applied a 12-amp battery charger and tried to start the bike and that the green neutral light does flicker when I press the starter button (suggesting that perhaps the starter button does function).

I was trying to minimize diagnosis - someone on another thread said they opened-up the housing for the kill switch and tiny parts when flying all over the place. I was hoping to avoid creating problems while trying to fix others

I'll start with the simple contact cleaner and lube of the clutch and the kickstand and the solenoid contacts (perhaps sandpaper too)

I *did* try to start it with lever in, lever out, sidestand up, sidestand down but to not avail. Push the start button and nothing happens...

It may be worth looking in the fusebox itself, I have had corrosion on the fuse terminals that has caused grief.

If the neutral light flickers when you press the starter button I would suspect the battery is weak, there may be a cell that is duff and cannot supply the required current when a load such as the solenoid / starter motor is applied. Or maybe the earth strap from the battery to the frame isnt making good contact.

Opening up the switches sounds like the stuff of nightmares, if they dont work after a squirt of cleaning spray, then either wire them out or replace them. Note that if you disconnect the propstand (sidestand) switch you will need to join the two wires that went to the switch.
