So I've just picked a relay & some horns. I'm having a bit of a nightmare trying to figure out the wiring. Anybody else done this? Does the horn switch trigger on + or -? I've figure out the positive wiring for the most part, but ground is giving me a headache...

Thanks,
-Kit

Heh. Thanks, that's the one I was using for reference. I'm still confused. (And hungry. That, at least, I can figure out how to fix... :hammer: )

Cheers,

I ended up cutting the block out of a splice connector to make a 4-ended ground wire. 3 female connectors for the horns & the relay, 1 male for the original horn ground.

There's some ugly spaghetti going on underneath my bottom triple, but I now have horns that work! :-D

They are a bit louder than stock as well! :lalala:

Cheers,
-Kit

Just as an "as we're on the subject" does anyone know of a commonly available replacement for the stock horns and where to get them.

Thanks
Nic :-D

3.5" diameter, 12 Volt DC, 2-connector horns are standard on our bikes. They are also standard on kajillions of other bikes, cars, trucks, & boats. Any auto parts store or bike shop should have them, & I'm sure there are lots of them on eBay as well. You should not have a problem finding them!

Cheers,

About the horns, I went to AutoZone and bought a couple of car horns. They were about $15 each. Three times as loud!!

The Triumph supplies a + voltage to the horn. The other side of the horn goes to ground.

In my case, I found that a car horn draws a little more currrent than the stock Triumph horn. On my 98 Exec, I used one car horn. I disconnected the wire to the second stock horn. One car horn is louder than two stock horns as it is.

On my 04 ST, I found that there is only one horn anyway, so replaced was very easy.

PS. My wife is 100% deaf and rides with me. She wears a hear aid, but turns it down on the motorcycle. She could not hear the stock horn at all. She can hear the car horn when I honk it!!

I don't know if this will help you or not, but the voltage problem can be eliminated with the use of a horn relay. With the relay, all the horn button is doing is completing the circuit from the battery to the horn(s). In other words, you would be getting full battery voltage. As a side note, if your horn switch is supplying the battery voltage (and it can't quite handle the voltage) it will prematurely burn out your horn switch. Cheers...
