Hi, My Daytona 900 has some transmission whine between about 40mph and 60mph audible on low to medium power. (on high power it is drowned out by the engine I assume) Could any one else who has one of these bike let me know if this in normal.

I am a bit paranoid as I haven't had this bike long and I discovered the oil was full of swarf from a previous owner having had the sprag clutch replaced by a dodgy garage who did it without splitting the crank. So when the modified the casing for the new clutch to fit they filled the engine with aluminum swarf. Hence I am concerned that the oil ways may have got clogged. I understand that lack of oil can make the transmission howl and just wanted to get some idea if this has happened or not.

If anyone has any other ideas of what I should check I would be very great full. I took the sump of this weekend and cleaned out the oil strainer as I thought that might be clogged causing starvation. It had allot of swarf in it but I don't think it was clogged.

I have listened for little end clatter and done a on load check to see if the big ends are damaged and it seems OK. There is some mechanical noise from the bike but I understand from other posts this is most likely normal.

Since the valves almost certainly need re shimming I plan to check them and then remove the cams to check the white metal bearings on the basis if these are OK then the rest of the bearings have probably survived as well.

Any pearls of wisdom would be gratefully received as I really like this bike and I don't want to see it tare itself to bits.

Is the whine in all gears? I don't think that the gearbox is fed oil, I think that it sits in oil, so starvation wouldn't be a issue if the oil level is maintained. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Gear box is splash/oil bath....

The bike does wine a little, but not too much between 50-60ish maybe from memory...

If the top end is ok and you have checked every thing else just go for it...sounds like all is ok so far, if major damage/clogged oil ways were there they would soon have trashed the lump anyway

All the best with it

Well acording to (FORD) "all manual transmissions are unique in noise and develop 'character' over time, this is normal and we will not replace it under warrenty!!!"
