Ok, the other day, when we got winter's lingering goodby kiss, I started the ol'girl ('96 w/ 26,000 miles). I noticed a buzzing imediately off idle. After running for about a minute, it went away. Today, it's still cold out, and again, same event. It doesn't do it after running for a minute or so. I doesn't do it after a warm engine start.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Zip

Is the buzz like a loose panel or maybe like a relay? What is the state of your battery charge?

No, it's comming from the top of the case, under the carburetors.
It just came off of the charger. It was a little hard to start. But the battery just came off of the charger.

Cold oil making everything a little sticky? How was finding neutral? I've noticed some weird vibrations coupled with having trouble getting into neutral in the cold weather, but it goes away once the motor's up to temp. I wouldn't worry about it, but keep in mind tha I'm also the guy who's not stressing too hard about being down a rotor bolt on each side...
Cheers,
-Kit

Noises like that are hard to pin down especially with the assorted rattles and werring going on with one of the old 900s....
I would guess some thing is a little loose...or being cold there is a little bit of clearance with something but as it warms it expands and stops buzzing..
Next time you have the tank off give everything a check up....

Here's an update- yesterday, after work, the machine was cold-soaked. When I went to start it, it was a little hard starting. Just before it finally caught, there was a very audible "clunk" from the machine.
It runs fine and when warm, it doesn't do it.
Oh well, run her until she won't run I guess.

I've got a bad feeling about this recent development.
I've had the "clunk" consistently now whenever I do a cold start. The buzzing is gone. So, I put a new AGM battery in. The only time I get a "clunk" is on a "kickback". It clunks when it starts-runs-dies cold. This is a loud clunk. Otherwise, it runs great. BTW, the sound emanates from the top of the transmission, directly beneath the carburetors.
I intend to call a dealer to get the price on a sprag fix. I don't have the time to do it myself.

Well, for the interested, I put a new AGM batt. in the bike. It did the hammer-to-case clack twice and it hasn't done it since. I am keeping the thing on charge religiously.
Thank God it hasn't gotten worse (and seems to be fine).
