On my 95 Speed Triple, I've developed an oil leak (over the past few months). I can't see exactly where its coming from, but I think its coming from the lower portion of the front sproket gaurd (the piece where the dipstick is).

It looks like I need to take the side stand off, and possibly the gear lever/foot rest to get to the chain cover. Triumph got $12 for a new gasket.

Has anyone else done this before? Any other oil leak experiences? Like I said I can't tell where the leak is coming from, maybe I'm going after the wrong thing.

hi yes you need to drain the oil for this one. so its good to do the job at oil change time. This leak appeared on my speed triple 900 and was also on my speed triple 750 coincidence , i think not. It can be clutch pushrod oil seal, oil seal behind drive sprocket or the oil seal in the sprocket cover where gear change shaft goes through, you can see if its that one though. Chances are its the clutch push rod oil seal , you have to take the sprocket cover off for this one which means draining the oil. i tryed to convince myself it was just over enthusiastic chain maintenance but in the end i had to admit it was a slight oil leak.

by the way i have seen more than one T300 speed triple with this same slight leak. so i have a feeling it might be quite common. maybe others could confirm this?

Huh. My Trident developed a leak on the other side of the motor.

How are your chain & sprockets doing? I just had mine replaced in December, & replaced all those seals & gaskets at the same time as per the shop manual.

To remove the front sprocket cover, my Haynes says to put it up on the centerstand, drain the oil, pull the shift lever, remove the sidestand & bracket, water pump hose cover (if fitted), clutch release cylinder (noting the location of the shorter bolt, & not pulling in the clutch lever while it's off), withdraw the clutch pushrod, then, finally, you can pull the sprocket cover.

Good luck, man, sounds like a pain.

Cheers,
-Kit

Yes I think it is common I have had a small leak on mine for some time I would guess that mine is a countershaft seal or the clutch pushrod seal as mine keeps the chain nicely oiled. I joke about it being a cheap scott oiler. of course the problem is then I come home and the bike forgets it potty training and hikes its leg on the garage floor.

I replaced the seals when I did the chain and sprockets 22K ago.....no problems sooo far (touch wood) but it did give me an insight as to what a pain it was to change the chain etc.... :???:

Next time it will be oil change (obviously), change side stand for the more recent Trophy one etc etc if I going to go and dismatle eveything i'll do as much as I can whilst doing it
