Hi
Just aquired a 95 Sprint two weeks ago with 17000 miles and dealer service history. Have ridden about 300 miles since purchase without any problem. - Excellent machine.

Yesterday after about a 10 mile run, as I slowed down to a road junction the engine cut out. It re-started after a few attempts but would tend to stop if the revs dropped below 3000.

After returning home I tried the bike a few hours later and it ran perfectly until the engine was really warm (about 10miles) and the problem repeated.

Anyone had any simiillar experience.

Hi
Tank was filled a few miles before it first happened, but I don't think it can be dodgy fuel as I've used that filling station on a regular basis

I assume that the bike pulls strongly when riding and has no other symptoms?

Do you need to use the choke extensively to get the engine warm?

Worth checking the carb idle adjustment (knurled knob under the carb by your left knee). This should be set when the engine is fully warmed up.

Good luck.

Hi Racing Green

Yes pulls like a train above 3000 with no misfiring

Choke can be put in after 30sec from cold although dosn't (or didn't before this problem) idle without some choke until warm.

It's difficult to set the idle now when hot as it stops!!

I've ordered a Haynes manual, so when it arrives I can check the carbs for deposits etc.

Looking at the bikes history although the services are up to date , last one at 16k, that was three years ago so the previous owner did less than 1000 miles in 3 years. Thiis is verified by the last 3 test certs so things may have gunged up. But it seems odd that is ran perfectlly for the first 300 mile.

Are there any common problems with the ignition unit on Sprints of this age?.

No issues with the igniter box - methinks that carbs could be gummed up, try some carb cleaner stuff or pull the carbs and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air. There is a possibility that the rubber spigots(between carbs & manifold) have deteriorated and cracked causing a leanness but unlikely, worth a check though. Hows the air filter, that might contribute if it's real dirty - does'nt sound like ignition, though the low tension connectors to the coils can become corroded - a simple oxidation scrape and a little electrical grease can solve that issue - thats a tank off jobbie - the coils are under there.
Does she do the same on the prime setting at the petcock(remember to set back to normal/reserve if that is not the issue). Good luck!

Check the fuel pipes under the tank, especially the smaller vacuum pipe to the petrol tap. On my Trident this had a tendancy to fold to partially closed due to the routing of it.
I would try flushing the carbs and get them balanced too.

Let us know the cause when you get it fixed.

er....good point!

Does the engine just suddenly cut out, or sputter and die?
